The Germans (as most of europe) have a bank holiday on the 1st May and the 8th May. They have the day off on the day, not on the nearest monday as we do.
That often means that if the day happens to be a thursday (as the 8th was this year) or a tuesday, most will take a long week end as a result.

OFFICIAL UPDATE:

The Ring is a lot quieter today so more laps will be possible. Stu @ MSD is very happy with his current lap times in the M5. He has bettered his previous lap times from last year which is great news.

The official NW Spokesperson also claimed that Wills bum is still on full display (buy a new belt mate....lol)
