Default Any Mountain Bike experts??

They're doing a scheme at work where you can get a new bike at a discount (tax savings thing) so it's time to chop the BMX in and get a proper big boy's bike! But I know sod all about mountain bikes.

It has to be one that Halfords either sell, or can source, and my budget is £400.

What should I be looking for, what size wheels, and good or bad things? I'm not actually going to be going up mountains, just the odd kerb as it's just a bike for getting me from my car to work, but would like something that gives me the option of heading up the odd hillock should the need arise.

I'm quite taken with this.. http://tinyurl.com/3sdnfu . Any good??

(Please no "Halfords are shit" comments, that's who the scheme's done through!)

Looks alright Mr White!
have a look down halfords and see what they look like for real..

you probably wont want an 18" one though.. you met me, i'm 6ft tall and ride a 16" frame. that said i'd use it quite differently to you i spose!

Probably a retard question but what difference would the frame size make? They do them up to 22in, surely Halfords don't stock bikes for giants?

lol. generally if you go for a smaller frame size, you can fling it about a bit easier,
but aside from that.. getting on and off it is easier too, as it aint so tall. lol

that scheme that they do at work is good we can choose up to 1k they pay 50% and you pay back the rest over a year then you have to pay back a small amount of money to buy the bike from the scheme ......good deal its all about getting you to ride your bike to work is this the same as your scheme at work .neil

Yeah, sounds like a similar deal. i actually drive to work, but park on the outskirts of town and ride into the centre. Buying the bike works out way cheaper than buying parking tickets!
