Have got an A6 (2004 pre-facelift model) and must agree that the 1.8T is gutless in them, but good in the A4. I have the 130PS 6-speed 1.9TDi FWD version and goes very well for what it is.
Drove an A4 and the roof felt very low when sitting in it compared to the A6 and I kept hitting my head when getting out, but in the A6 it is wonderfully spacious.
Would spend the extra and get the A6. Would also go for the post 2002 version if possible as they are fully colour-coded on the bumpers, etc. and do not look cheap like the early ones.
Also, the S-line rear spoiler looks the part on the back of the A6 and takes away that rounded bootlid shape. Bonded on as well, so no chances of rusting through drilled holes.
