im after some suggestions, based on experience, for a car that can fit a dog and a pushchair in the boot, and a child in the back. So estate cars etc

must be 'fairly' satisfying to drive
reliable
'fairly' fast
max budget 2500 pounds

230bhp
0-60: 6.1
150mph
4x4
2.2 inline 5 cylinder turbo
Spend 250 quid on a chip and it will take it to ~270bhp

Not too bad really mate. I wasnt actually trying to get good mpg either, just a steady drive. Obviously if your going to boot everywhere then it goes down to early 20's.
But it goes to show that if you need/want it to be reasonable on fuel then it can be. Like most cars with reasonable power/performance.
