Got shown the difference between the mountune and the new style of head bolts yesterday. The new style are a good bit thicker on the second half of the stud and also have a finer thread. Alan said because of the finer thread they use a smaller nut meaning the head doesnt need modded.

I keep these on the shelf but they differ from the Mountune type studs in that the machined recesses in the deck face are a smaller diameter which avoids breaking into the oil gallery, the fastening nuts are 17mm too which helps. These are obviously no good if your block is already machined for the larger diameter type.

Some early 2wd heads had a smaller bolt hole in the head so these need machining for the machined socket to fit.

just to clear this up you can only machine a socket if useing a late 2wd or 4x4 head, the recess for 3-door head is much smaller and smaller washer

i had 2 sockets machined down and tried them and there was no danger they were getting in the hole

i got a single hex and a double hex done and they were so thin it was unreal,if you tapped them it sounded like a tin box,and neither fitted by a long shot

£60 later the head was opened up

Are these not 100% identical to the Mountune ones as I was told they used the same part between them, this was many years ago when I bought mine so not sure if anything has changed since?

I intend to insert steel rings (loctite sealed) into my block deck to use the smaller diameter O ringed long studs you mention.
Would be nice if the main supplier got them made in the larger diameter to save the hassle.
