can't say i've seen a rod go like that before, i've only seen them pop at the big or little ends not just come aprat in the middle like tha tone seems to have

We have a friend (Andy) who has a TT lump in his Lotus Elise, running 320-350bhp using a largely standard bottom end.

Just curious if you were pushing big power to get the rod to snap.

Would have thought 270bhp and normal revs would have been fine - freaky bad luck perhaps?

At least the new motor will have some harder internals! More boost and more power then!!!

Be good to see it at Bedford, want to see how a modest power FWD car with the right bits on it actually goes

wounder!

as unfortunate as it is, im always interested to see engines that have let go lol

any ideas what caused it?

as i know of a few std audi motors making more power than that and still ok

i think wyane at pro-alloys elise with an audi engine was running circa 350bhp on std motor when it dropped a valve...

that was a mess!

he probably had a spare for them "just in case" moments sitting in the back of the motor anyway and more than likely spannered it into place and then carried on a few minutes later

those shots are probably from when he got home and took it apart during his tea break

do you really need to ask that?

Whole thing must be fucked surely?

Luckily unlike cossies you can easily find a perfect condition head for these vag motors though luckily.

Good bit of carnage that martin, if you are going to fuck it, do it properly I reckon

New motor sounds interesting, what sort of power will it be?

4th picture down shows the picton at the top of the cylinder, so it's either saved everything or it's fooked everything

i'd more than likley put money on it having fooked everything as it would have let go with a bit of speed

I do have several spare engines, one of which has already been stripped/checked and re-assembled with special valves, big port head, h section rods, balanced bottom end , new flywheel and twin plate clutch. The damaged sump has slowed progress

sadly ive just sold the engine that might've helped but ive still got the shell if you fancy a project ! I believe these use the 4wd Floorpan from the TT so a 4wd Seat Cupra might be possible .

Tony - is that a Cupra Cup car?
Do you know what engine spec those Cup cars ran - power/rpm and inrternal components?
I believe they were around 250bhp and pretty much standard internals, including the rods, with baffled sump and paddle clutch. Do you know if this is accurate?

Lucky with the head

I had a engine go off at 9k once and 3 rods left the block, understandably I assumed the head would of been totalled but that wasn't touched either.

I'm not quite sure how though

chhers Tony
we bought one with a view to converting for the Castle Combe saloons championship this year, but was too bent to be worth reclaiming it turned out, so all the bits are going in a TT instead we need considerably more than 270bhp though, so will be following Martin's rebuild with interest

In a turbo engine, surely it would always happen on the way down? (unless it's a high revving 1)

They snap/bend with torque, its rev's what send them the other way.

My Evo did the exact same and head was untouched.

However, my mates civic, 9500rpm rod failure. That heads been damaged slightly
