Default AA - Poor service?

Other day mate had his A4 running on 3, AA came out to him, coil pack fucked.
Turned out to be ignition amplifier, diagnosed by yours truly.

Last night a belt went, took all but cambelt, 3 in total.
AA chap came out, said should get you home with no charging (10 miles or so) and viscous fan will keep it cool.
Couple miles and it nearly overheats.
I'd have told him to stick blowers on full whack, but then battery wouldn't have lasted so fucked whatever...
Another AA chap comes out and tows him home.

How out of order was that?

Anyone ever complained to the AA at all?

Had to call them out twice for the missus's car and they've been spot on.

Been spot on with the couple of times i've had to call them.

Once when a rear wheel bearing shat itself on my old Focus and the back end starting twitching on the motorway.

Other time when my strut shat itself and blew my tyre out on my 306 and i didn't have a jack or anything with me

I needed a spec lift, trailer or beavertail after killing two wheels and tyres (and only having one space-saver spare) on Princes Street in Edinburgh.

It took the wankers over 4.5 hours to appear even knowing there were kids in the car, and they never once called with an update, leaving me to wonder if/when they would turn up.

Still, the kids got to see their first willie when some pissed up student thought he'd have a slash against the parked car, not knowing we were sat in it. Nice long blast of the horn brought him to his senses though!

I have to admit that the coil on plugs are a common fault on the Audi engines so I cant blame them for assuming that.

I've had nothing but a good service from them which tbh is more than I can say about the RAC after the nightmare I had trying to get a car back from Belgium

i bought a 3 door cossie a while back from devon-it siezed up on the m5(still in devon).i live 200 miles away.
rang the aa told them not to bother sending a patrolman as the engine had siezed and it needed recovery.an hour later a patrolman turned up"it needs recovering mate,i cant do anything with it" 3 hours later a wagon turned up to get the car home.

i suppose they have a certain procedure to go through, but it does get frustrating.!

AA are useless and seem to have a hatred of modified cars for some reason

I'm now with Green Flag, and have been for the last 5 years - they are absolutely spot on. Fair enough, their work is franchised off, but none the less, garanteed to turn up when they say and the people who turn up are always a friendly bunch.

Best thing about it - they always asked what sort of recovery I would like, and always sent the correct one - IE, flatbed or van + trailer

The issue for me is expecting mate to drive about 10 miles with just a cambelt, with no PAS, hoping it won't overheat, and battery will last.
No way that should happen, and second bloke that came out said he was embarrassed by it.

Jonny
Coils are common problem I grant you, doesn't take too much brainpower to swap a couple round, and see if the same pot is missing a spark, like I did.

Topaz
Broken down in lorries a couple times with terminal problems, policy to send a man and van first - if they send a wrecker when it could have been fixed, someone's gonna get shitty with paying for needless towing.
Suppose most use same policy.

i waited 6 fucking hours with the AA on the side of the m40/42 junction when my wheel bearing exploded...that was contracted out to local pikeys with a fucked up flatbed.

well i work for green flag (franchise) and without being biased i think its the best way to get to people quickly.

i had a driveshaft snap on my car and obviously i had breakdown cover so when i called up i told them the problem and instantly sent a flat bed and recovered me home 285 miles!! no questions asked

i think the aa can have good and bad days and i believe they are using other private companies to cut down on call out times

the aa always send out a patrolman first with our works vans

but when you call them up and say the van is on the hard shoulder with collapsed suspension and they still send a patrol out to see if he can fix it (and then he calls back and says "it;'s fooked, i'll call a truck" and it takes 4 hours to get there from the time of the breakdown) it starts to get a little silly

ive been trying to get breakdown cover for my recovery truck

what a fooking nightmare, its a 3.5t truck but over 18ft when loaded (speclift) so wont be covered by std policy, ive called the aa ive called the rac they all get confused, onbe did say if your a company i can credit check your company and i can go on a pay as ya go service, fair enough i spose for a 50 mile recovery id be looking at prob 300 quid

but i havent got a company etc for them to credit check

fookin stoopid, all they wpould need is a fixed / tilt bed with a spec on it to recover what ever i was pulling how hard can it be

id quitye happily pay a 300 quid odd fee just to know id be safe but as yet still no piece of mind
