Anyone had a VW Corrado? Suggested engine choice?
Looking to buy a VW Corrado soon to use as a daily driver instead of my XR2 (worlds WORST daily driver ).
Fancy a Corrado to just lower on coilovers with a nice set of rims. But, which engine is best? Anyone had much experience with them?
Tempted to go VR6 but petrol consumption isn't going to be great and they go for a fair bit more money but they seem to come in the better colours and specs obviosuly.
G60 doesnt really interest me as they seem to go for good money when I wouldnt really use the performance.
So I am looking at the 1.8 or 2.0 16 valve, but ive read the 2.0 ones especially are sluggish? Now as stated I dont want a fast one but i want something respectable!
Anyone driven a 2.0 or 1.8? Are they that bad?
Cheers!

I'm taking it that the 1.8 16v is the same engine as in the mk2 Golf, which I've only ever heard good things said.

Go for the VR6, had one for a year & very impressed. A mate had a G60 which was quick until he blew the super charger up, which cost him £1,500 including fitting to get fixed & that was back in the early nineties. Never been in a 16v.

For a daily driver I'd leave the G60 and VR6 alone.
If it was my money I'd look for a cheap 2.0 16V
Sensible mpg, cheap (and simple) to fix, reliable and if it's a good one, a nice drive. They feel slow compared to a VR6 or G60, but the handling makes up for the lack of poke.
I've driven all and owned a Mk2 GTi Golf that was still going very strong with 239K on the original engine with no leaks or other issues, so I've nothing but praise for VWs... But I love Fords too.. promise

Thanks that's just what i want to know really!
Got my twin engine Fiesta being built for the fun factor so think a Corrado would be nice compromise
How did you find the 1.8 to the 2.0 if you've driven both?

as said, depends if its a daily driver or not. ive had a few G60s over the years, very nice cars. the £1500 for a blown supercharger is a bit steep. i think that price is probably from VAG. There are plenty of tuners around now how can suply second hand, or rebuilt ones for a monkey or thereabouts. ~Ive had a few in quite a good state of tune - none would keep up with a 300bhp saph though. not a chance.
Gearbox is a bit pants. 1st gear is a waste of time. but you can change that for a vr6 gear and it sorts the problem - hassle though.
VR6 - top car, lots of torque. juicy. tuneable though. lots of turbo and supercharger conversions about. and at one point it was voted best handling front wheel drive car.
for everyday, stick to the 1.8s. they are better than the 2.0 which are a bit sluggish.
