A lad I know had a mk3 Golf VR6 and whilst it was smooth and powerfull it only averaged mid 20s. Plus he was so paranoid about the timing chain snapping he chopped it in after about 6 months.

I'm taking it that the 1.8 16v is the same engine as in the mk2 Golf, which I've only ever heard good things said.
