Its probably caused by too many concurrent attempts to access the database at once.

The solution is either a database server than can handle more requests, or less users or more scalable forum software that handles large volumes of requests more efficiently.

Do you know of any other forums on the same scale as PF that have this problem?

No because I dont know of any other forum that is this large, but has NO admins who give a flying fuck about the site.

Its intermittant, you just happened to be not using it at the time there was a problem obviously (as did I on this occasion)

Its not a case of bad for one person and not others, when it does it, EVERYONE is equally effected.

does this mean if someone was to hack PF as it stands now, it would remain in their control for ages cos theres no admin around ?

I think Stu would take over, I'd like to think he wouldn't but I'm sure he would.

Potentially.
Might even force the admin to actually get off their arses and do something.

So I reckon a friendly hack is probably a good plan!

Question is is the server still hosted externally or on a server within the new "IB" companies datacentre, if they have one ?

as it would be much easier to restore order if they were in control physically of the server, wouldnt it ?
