Default Anyone know how much it is to do an MCSE?

I need to do one as I'm sick of earning crap at my current job. I'm having trouble persuading them to put me through it and am considering doing it myself.

Cheers folks.

go onto microsoft.com and find out the exam numbers you want to do then go to a site called prometric. If iirc correctly the exams are Ł100 each, though if you need to do the course then it will probably be thousands for somebody to teach you.

Be aware there is various MCSE you can take such as server 2003 or windows 2000. These exams are not one test but usually made up of 5 exams or more.

Have you any I.T qualifications?

If possible, do Cisco training instead of Microsoft.

Yes mate I work in IT. I just have a boggo college qual equivalent to 2 A-Levels and I've been at the job two and a half years now (about 18month with this employer) and want to move onto a proper salary and not this Mickey Mouse effort I'm on now. If I have to pay a couple of grand (as I expect) then so be it. The gains will far outweigh that. I'm aware of the basic course structure and that it's done by units etc.

I'm in a shit situation because work won't do this for me until I'm doing a much better job, but my attention span at work sucks because they only give me crap jobs to do and I want to be more involved in important stuff.

I'd like to do the 03 based course ideally.

Just done my foundation certificate, the next one is fooking hard though.

I wouldn't bother with an MCSE, I've worked with so many people who claim to have one and know fuck all about what they supposedly "studied". If you have the right CV and can come across as intelligent, it'll stand you in much better stead than dribbling down your front going "'ere I got one of those MCSE thingies".

Sometimes you will have to do the shitty work to prove that you are ready to handle the higher priority/skilled work and build your cv. People may knock the MCSE qualification, but it serves as a useful skills baseline when applying for jobs. However, suitable experiance and skills fit will always take precidence during the selection process.

I'm with collierm on that one, wouldnt even bother. I interviewed a few people as there were positions in my team and I took on 2 of them that didnt have MCSE's and they are probably my best 2 engineers!! Experience is the key. You will find that most of the content within the MCSE exams are totally irrelevant to an everyday job.

As said.. Alot of people have the MCSE and employers prefer someone who has actually done the hard work ad not just studied.

I'm looking at the ITIL course at the moment though

I'm doing the MCSA first (already have an IT degree) which is basically 4 out of the 7 MCSE exams. Books were Ł70 not sure how much exams are yet as I havent doen one. You can take the last 3 exams too to bump the MCSA up to a MCSE

Work in IT already so employers are paying

Yeah but I won't get enough experience here and without the MCSE if I go anywhere else I'll have to take a low level job

Not necessarily. Like I said, demonstrate you have the skills and the intelligence and the MCSE won't matter a jot. My last three jobs have all required MCSE which I don't have, I had good interviews, passed all the techie tests and its never held me back.

Seen loads of jobs on Reed Recruitment website and jobsite with no requirements for MCSE.

Cheers

Matt
