Default Do i fix it or...

break it? Basically on my ST200 , the coil pack and Maf sensor need replacing and to top it off the power steering pump has now died .

I`m a bit reluctant to spend more money on it as its done a few miles, and i`m wondering if it will be worth it because it owes me less than £1300.

Do i cut my losses or find the cash and hope nothing else goes wrong?

Just looking for other peoples opinions...

Thanks, Ed

If the car's otherwise sound and you like it, then fix it up. If there are other big bills looming, clutch etc then it may be worth your while moving it on.

Might be worth having a good scout around for second hand bits to fix it as cheaply as poss.

As a car that needs work it's pretty much worthless other than breaking it. So it could be more cost effective to fix it and sell it on.

I can just about handle the coil pack and Maf sensor, but the power steering pump is main worry.

I can`t do that myself and have a feeling a garage will charge a fair bit to do it. The car has done 173k so i `m wondering what will go wrong next...

But saying that, the car does have FULL service history including paperwork from Essex Police from when they had it, its had a new clutch, brakes, and a few more bits fitted in October so could be worth selling on when fixed.

Going to ring a couple of garages and see what they say with the power steering pump....

A PAS pump is a pain on some cars DIY, but a daily thing for most garages, so shouldnnt be bad, and expect its same as all V6 Mk2 Mondeo ones too.

Quite rare cars, so worth doing something with.

Good to see one going strong (ish) with that many miles. Mine's on 118K at the mo.

Can't help thining that the mileage is going to put off any potential purchasers so you're probably going to struggle to get £2500 for it. With that in mind it's probaly a better bet to fix and keep – assuming the PAS pump doesn't end up being silly money to fix.

I take it you've never had the 'dreaded V6 tick' then?

If it was a boggo ST24 i'd say bin it, but the 200 is still a realativley sought after car, I had one and sometimes really regret getting rid.

I`ve heard of the dreaded tick, mine don`t have it. I did check that when i went to have a look, is that not a slack timing chain?

It does purr like a kitten and goes very very well when its not playing up, bodywork is `tatty` to say the least with holes in the side of the f.bumper for the blue strobes, and roof is a bit funny from the sirens but in genaral that don`t bother me for the price i paid for it.

I had one before too and i do miss it. I smashed it up and bent the floor but still sold it for £1,600.

I`m going to keep it providing its not silly money to repair i think...

The tick seems to be often diagnosed as a manifold gasket but turns out to be the head gasket - Apparently there's an inherent weakness in one spot and many blow through - but then continue to drive without any noticeable loss in driveability for many many miles.

It does seem to be alarming that so many go, but *touch wood* mine's still sweet, and it's reassuring that they can take the miles.
