I have been in an evo 8 properly pushed in the wet and its quite unpredictable.

It corners at massive speeds(had the tyres scheerching in the wet )and has amazing speeds but needs total commitment IMO

I do love evos tho and its one of the only car I would swap the saf for.

well, i might as well add to the sensible conversation

Evo's are great, capable cars, and you cannot knock them really, the only thing they really lack is that 'X' Factor, they are just a bit too clean and clinical..... Great cars but no character ... I think Mike has summed it up perfectly, you buy an Escort or indeed any other Cosworth with your heart, not your head.

I think Bens just pissed off at the small bits that need sorting the car is self is fine! And soon enough they'll be sorted IMO Like he says, He only done 3 track days and its ironing out a few little niggly bits

Went out in Bens Escort @ donno and it never missed a beat once and performed well

So long as he keeps power to the same level, and sorts the little probs out, Like the Gearbox mount thread (or what ever it was?) the car will be as good as an EVO equivalent.

He would be stupid now to throw it in and buy an EVO, As much as they are good cars, His Escort is nearly there

Everyone going on about niggles with an escos and they'll get sorted blah blah.... then once you do, you get a major niggle that no-one has mentioned, is that the MT75 gearbox on a modded escos over 330bhp will 99 times out of a 100 let you down. Fact!

i just don't think i can sell up just to be reliable for track days.

there is no love towards the evos for me,very good cars etc...but i have always had rs cars since i could drive, and to change now just to have a reliable car for track etc...i'm just not 100% with it.

i would want an evo to be near the power or feel like my car on track, wonder if it will be more reliable if at that power etc...

it does piss me off and others laugh everytime something goes wrong with the cossie, the neighbours think i'm mad and my mates do aswell spending the amount i have on it,just spending the money for gearbox, i got leathered by my mates.

is getting rid of the cossie for the evo really worth it?

decisions decisions....
Having made the very difficult decision myself.

YES DEFFO WITHOUT A SHADOW 100%

I will never go back to a Cossie even though I love them, and loved mine when it worked, which at a guess I'd say was 50% of the time.

The novelty of having a 320bhp car that works everytime I use it is great.
I've done 4 track days and the Ring in it in 3 months. It's cost me a service and set of rear pads.

The fact that it laps Combe and the Ring at the same pace as my old 470bhp Cossie speaks volumes about how good they are and it can only get better when I mod the standard stuff for bits like the Cossie had on it.

All I need now is a bit more poke (380/400 would do, more would be great) and then I won't get held up by people in track prepped Escorts that won't pull over when a quicker car is stuck up their ass for lap after lap. Those who saw me at Dono will know who I mean and why power is the only thing I plan to concentrate on now, the handling is fine as standard.

Get one Dave, I genuinely think you'll like it, Ford man or not. You love going fast on track, you get fed up with things letting you down, you have enough money in the Escort to change. I'd say go for it.

Si
Wish i never read that

Fair Play to you tho Si it was you pulling out of the pit when i was putting the escort on the back of the trailer at the end of the day that made me think shit what am i doing

still im going to see this year out as i know the car will still break for EVO money this winter only time will tell
Ben,

Here's a bit of lame offer, but something that may or may not help you decide.

Let me know which 3 other track days you're booked onto at the moment, or any others that you plan on booking.

I gather you're new to track work so if there's one I've not done (Cadwell, Snetterton or Oulton are obvious ones I can think of) I'll book it up too. That way no track knowledge advantage.

My suggestion / offer: We both drive round in our own cars, see how we get on times / speeds or whatever. You jump in my car for a passenger ride. You drive my car. See what you think then

Believe me, after pouring easily Ł15k or more (almost deffo more) into my Saph over the 5 years I had it I know what it's like to spend a lot and have niggles. Anything that could go wrong with my car did. My 2006 season was blighted by 4 trackdays the car died on.

The Evo certainly isn't bomb proof and invincible, but it's doing WAY better than I expected already.

I personally don't mind what car you love, what car you own, or what car you want. I just think you're a worthy candidate for experiencing a very average Evo first hand!

Mine is 320bhp, has coilovers (not set up at all, just lashed on there for now) and 330mm 6 pots up front with road pads . All in it owes me Ł13500 at present. That I guess is standard ish Stage 1 Escos money.

I bet it would lap most tracks in the UK quicker with the same driver than an Escos would. I also bet for me at least I'd enjoy being quicker more than having a bit of character or better looks (which I personally think match, not exceed an Evos)

Basically before you think of breaking the Escort, try an Evo and see. Mine is very average but I think goes well. Just imagine it with say 500bhp and proper work on the handling & stoppers.

I think it would be awesome. However with your spec and even a modest increase in power (say nearer 400/450bhp) your Escort will also be awesome. You've deffo got the right ingredients and have done the right mods in the correct order. You just need a break now and a bit of luck! I hope you get some successful trackdays under your belt in her

Take me up on my offer, give my car a go and see what you think. Be good to put the two cars together on the track at the same time too, see how they go against each other (in a friendly way, it's not a race after all (although it is ))

I'm at Bedford with the RSOC in Feb, are you going?

Same offer also extended to Dave Cos4x4, although he'll prob be a little at the lack of power!

Am I the only one that think comparing a car that is 15 years old and runs parts that are of an even older design to a car that has ten years on it as a bit unfair?

Love them!

Don't really know why I haven't got one to be honest! REALLY rate them!

AWESOME CARS!
Thanks Mike and Lee, high praise indeed. Mike, was a pleasure, anytime matey

Lee Thanks that means a lot I was having a great day round Donington, and one of the things that spurred me on was seeing you in your 911 Turbo. I just had to overtake you one way or another!

I took my chance then as I know the car is new to you, and the clutch and tyres were probably not as you'd like them! Thought it was now or never, I don't often get the chance to race Lee let alone pass him!!

I will expect my ass to be firmly handed back to me next time the 3 door is on track or when you and the Porker have more miles under your belt!

In the meantime yeah Evo's are Awesome, and yeah you should have one!

Yes you are the only one

Nah, you're quite right. I just would like to let him and anyone else experience it first hand and see. They can make their own minds up.

Something I wished someone had offered me years ago when I was spending out shed loads on my Cossie. I just wish some of my Mullet / T4 engine etc had been spent on the Evo instead.

Car's like yours, Mike's, Rod's etc are amazing and full respect to you for doing what you do.

For me though, the Evo is deffo the right choice for my budget and intentions

No, not when someone asks which is better or what they should buy. Simple answer is the Evo is miles better than a Cossie, indeed how does a tuned Cossie compare to a decently tuned Impreza, Skyline, etc? If you just want a Cossie for the badge or to say I love being the under dog, then it doesn't matter, it's a Cossie and that's it. Depends on who you are, a "fan" of a specific badge/car (something I will NEVER understand), or a petrol head that just wants to buy the best car for the budget/needs they have. Horses for courses and one that will never be decided on here

SiB I know evos are amazing cars specially with a 6 available for under 10 k now.

I have seen my mate kill his from cold, never let it cool down and basically drive like a maniac and it just take it all in its stride

It's not compulsory to bin a car at a track day Dave

But no worries, I know what you're saying. Even driving carefully there's always some other tit out there to ruin ya day!

Shame our cars are not quite on even power terms - I know your driving is spot on, but your extra gee gees means you'll leave me for dead down the straights, then I think it'll be pretty even in the twisties!

I have big power plans, but that comes at a price, so going to get as much of 2008 out of the way on humble stage 3 power first, getting wasted by damn 400bhp+ Cossies down every straight!

We'll chat more at Bedford, hopefully mechanical gremlins will leave us both alone for a good battle!

Something i've found out in the car scene is

Character = Unreliability!

Soooo, buy an evo, with all the money you save on repairs, spend it on upgrades, to a level where it starts to need the constant maintenance of a cossy, and then you'l have a car thats quick, and got character.

Not a lame offer at all mate very kind of you

Sounds cool wouldnt mind a go not like i would take any libertys as i wouldnt want to be paying you what it owes you for a damaged car lol, you could drive mine aswell maybe at the same time agaisnt each other joke

Believe me, after pouring easily Ł15k or more (almost deffo more) into my Saph over the 5 years I had it I know what it's like to spend a lot and have niggles. Anything that could go wrong with my car did. My 2006 season was blighted by 4 trackdays the car died on.
i did remember your problems you were having befor you got the evo

The Evo certainly isn't bomb proof and invincible, but it's doing WAY better than I expected already.
is a lot new car tho isnt it

is cheap and Black ones are sexy i would have a black one

I bet it would lap most tracks in the UK quicker with the same driver than an Escos would. I also bet for me at least I'd enjoy being quicker more than having a bit of character or better looks (which I personally think match, not exceed an Evos)
shame one of us cant afford both cars

Basically before you think of breaking the Escort, try an Evo and see. Mine is very average but I think goes well. Just imagine it with say 500bhp and proper work on the handling & stoppers.
im sure things would start to go wrong as you started to up the power more things will need sorting and it goes on and on

I think it would be awesome. However with your spec and even a modest increase in power (say nearer 400/450bhp) your Escort will also be awesome. You've deffo got the right ingredients and have done the right mods in the correct order. You just need a break now and a bit of luck! I hope you get some successful trackdays under your belt in her
Cheers mate

Take me up on my offer, give my car a go and see what you think. Be good to put the two cars together on the track at the same time too, see how they go against each other (in a friendly way, it's not a race after all)
Would be if i could drive as well as you or if your car was only 280hp and on standard suspention and breaks

I'm at Bedford with the RSOC in Feb, are you going?
yes mate i sure will be there but then you dont need to worrie about me there is another stage 3 escos you will be having lots of fun with

Dont think we can compair my escos with your car not for the reason people have said yes yours is a lot newer but my driving is no where near as compentant as yours

saying that it is still a fantastic offer and oppotunity that i look forward to taking you up on

pmsl! Si at binning it.

Si,

tbh, i don't think my car will be done for Bedford, not the 2nd of Feb,maybe just maybe the 27th Feb for Donno hopefully.

i will have to sell my place at Bedford.

hope your evo will be just as reliable at 400+, you don't want to start all the spending again.

all us cossies owners will be waiting for it to break now.

there will be a track day soon when the cosworth will be perfect and we will see how they compare then,i will slow down on the straights to wait for you if you want.

see you soon Si.
