You will never get there..... look at Rainbirds..... the ultimate spec for reliability and response.... its always fucked. Simple. Buy a evo and none of you will regret it.

Lee i am looking at these also, the performance looks fantastic

Your biggest problem is that you're spending money on an okay car, trying to make it into a good track car.

I went down that road with my saff, and wish I never had. What a car I could have had for the money spent on that thing.

Personally I think Mike's wrong, and just addicted to Cosworths. Why would you go to a trackday to show that a lesser car can be made as quick as a better one by spending truckloads of cash?

Surely that much is obvious already? Why not start with the better car? What does an Escort Cosworth have that an EVO doesn't? And if you're going to say "character", then give me something specific? What characteristics - breaking down and going home on a trailer? Yeah, that's really endearing!

I wish I'd just bought an EVO 7, spent a little on that, and I'd have a lovely point to point road car that's not too boy racer, AND a track weapon.

Surely the amount of people on this post who don't for one second regret it should be enough to sway you?

IMO, having a track car should always be about the fun you have on the track, and the enjoyment it gives you personally. What difference what badge is on the front of the car?

RichardPON

my car is not an out and out track car,i like to used it on the roads etc...i like the escort cosworth for that.

maybe if it just was for track then another car would be more suitable, but the way it is now,its half and half.

i love the way it looks, the history of the rs cars etc...the whole lot about the rs cars, people look at them and realise what a monster of a car they were/are in the days gone by and thats something like too.

the evos would do nothing for me in the way of road pressence, well no where near the escort does.

no more now,the escort is staying for now.

One reason I got rid of my S2 and bought my Pulsar so I could get on track in 2008, Although I've had a few problems there sorted now and will be doing its first track day in Feb, which is what I wanna do! Wouldn't have been tracking the S2 this year, thats for sure! As much as I want a mad S2, Im glad I got rid tbh

Nope, as I had to take a serious look at my finances and realised it was a huge waste of money.

I've still got my MR2 turbo, and that was an absolute blast on track - probably better than my track prepped saff would ever have been!

I'll be back with a car for the 2009 season, but I want to go racing again, so it'll be a Caterham of some description.

I have to admit I find it difficult to get passionate about a car like the Evo. They are good at what they do, power/speed/handling/reliability however when it comes to looks the Escos wins hands down.

Theres no question the escos is better looking or has the nostalgia with it but i know what id rather have.

One that works when you want it to or one that forever lets you down.....its a no brainer.

Gatecrasher your car is stunning and you've obviously spent forunes on it... what Ł30k+?? and you've not started on the engine.... a standard evo 5 or 6 for Ł9k would give you ten times the pleasure and fun and still be faster and more reliable on the track or road.

Dont mean that cheeky by the way but you know its true.

100% agree with that Andy.

What i was looking for when i bought mine was a car that i could use every day of the year and get the odd track day out of it as well.

Sold my escos and bought a Evo VII FQ300. Added bonus is that its built on the RSII model.

have had it 1year later this month and have covered near 15,000miles in it with only service costs / 1 set of rear pads / Clutch and fuel as must have's. Everything else ive spent has been through choice and that includes a set of 8 pots for the front, downpipe and de cat and some nice Defi's.

have done over 400miles on track this year and drive from the NE of Scotland to the circuits and back.

The Escos is still the 2nd best cosworth out there but whether id buy another one is a debate thats constantly going on in my head

Been there done it loved it hated it will i wont i

Standard Evos are 290bhp and with an Ecutek reflash costing Ł550 plus decat and uprated fuel pump, you'll easily get 350bhp and it would beat your cossie on track by the Evo's standard handling specification.

I bet you woudnt keep up with me around any track of your choice in a standard evo... power wish they are quoted as 286 but are very responsive.

In fact id guarantee it.

Put your money where your mouth is then

as you can see i have only done 3 track days in my whole life and have never pretended to be any sort of fast driver or say that i am quicker than any indervidual person Ever!

As you seem to feel the need to boast about how good a driver you are and how i would never keep up with you and that i can pick the track then so be it

Get your self a Totaly standard Evo 5 or 6 no mods at all bring it to Snetterton whenever you like?

Shall we say Ł500 as that should cover the cost of the days outing fuel ect?

Sadly i sold my evo for a M3 then started my own business so i'm unable to do so.

You're taking my comments the wrong way... i'm not trying to annoy you or be cheeky i just think you really need to take your ford blinkers off as what i said i GUARANTEE you is correct.

You are throwing money down the drain.

I'd love an escort cosworth but it's be standard and used on occasion and to look at as for spirited driving id have another evo no questions.

It seems that a fair few of you are missing the whole point of owning an Escos - yes, they brake, are old etc, and if you think with your head the Evo wins hands down every single time - no contest...
I was seriously considering buying an Evo 6 rather than my Escos..

Why didn't I? -
Simple - I HAD to have an Escos - if not I'd always have wanted one - I'd wanted one since I was 15 And now would I change it in for an Evo - head says yep, in a second- yeah, buy a nice Evo 7...
But my heart says no......
And the only reason? - because its not an Escos Sad isn't it - And I'd put money that a fair few Escos owners probably feel the same way

You cant actualy GUARANTEE Fuck all as you havent even got an Evo to chalange me in like i said get a car and come to snetterton and ile show you what my unreliable escort can do

up untill then i didnt think you was being cheeky but saying the things you said i felt was Rude

what i choose to spend/waste/throw my money away on has again fuck all to do with you i was asking what ar people would prefer out of an evo 8 or 9

when i need advice on how to spend my money i will be sure to ask

Before I started experimenting with different specs, my car spent the previous 3 years at 450bhp (in car) and 40,000 miles untouched engine wise, with just the same comsumables as you would expect regarding servicing and tyres. This was not normal mileage either, but thrashed to fuck mileage at the Ring (twice a year) and numerous track days (6-7 a year).

I then decided when the engine was beginning to show signs of it's age (using oil), that I wanted to completely change the spec of the car and do some things that hadn't been done before. Unfortunately I discovered why some of these things haven't been tried before , but as far as I am concerned, when you cross into unchartered territory, it is expected to have some teething problems. Now that all the teething problems have been resolved, I expect that 2008 will be the start of another trouble free 2-3 years (although transmission wise is still unknown ).

Also, you have to remember that I am in a VERY privalleged position in that I am fortunate in not only having access to a variety of cars, but also friends who are trusting enough to allow me to drive their cars on track. Therefore, where the majority of you are preaching with no knowledge of a well sorted Cossie, you forget that I have driven well sorted versions of almost ALL the cars you mention, and in case you didn't notice, I STILL have a Cossie .

Now that either tells you I'm stupid, or that I have driven the cars you're suggesting buying, and somehow found them wanting.

Just so you know the Evo's I have driven (AGAIN, as I mentioned it earlier in this post - along with a number of so-called "super-cars" and fast road cars (all the M3s etc) ):
1. Evo 6 RSII Extreme (1.6 turns lock to lock, rifle bolt gear change, APs all round (supplied by me ) and Recaro Pole Positions), 1.6 bar, claimed 350bhp.
2. Evo 6 TM, Dunlop DJ02s, AVA tuned, 280bhp @ WHEELS.
3. Evo VII, RS diffs gearbox, Tein suspension, APs, APT car running 550bhp at time.
4. Evo VIII MR FQ340, AVA tuned to 370bhp, APs (supplied by me ).

I think that qualifies me to make an accurate comparison to my car - whereas the majority of you lot have only driven Cossies half heartedly modified - and guess what? As much as I can APPRECIATE the Evos and what they can do, after the novelty has worn off, I KNOW I would find myself missing the Escort. Analysing it, I can only really attribute this down to the driver involvement that it gives, basically an average driver could drive an Evo as fast as I could. In the Escort, I am a part of the equation (or at least I FEEL like I am ), I FEEL that I help make the car go fast, in not only my considered chosen mods, but by my input at the wheel.

Modifying an Evo is almost as anodyne as driving one, you do a set amount of mods the same as everyone else and Bob's your Mother's brother, you get a totally compitent car - the sames as EVERY other Evo on the road / track. My own car, I am searching out ways to give me the edge over other track users, so that I get greater enjoyment out of driving it and also other people scratch their heads that a shonky old Ford is actually better than the sum of it's parts.

What is the torque split on an RS evo where it is fixed front to rear? The only thing that upsets me with evo's is the pose they seem to have. I love Rwd always have. I have driven 4x4 saffs which still react quite like Rwd cars - eg you get a slide on and they drift properly out of the corner(in my opinion and they way I like it) eg as if they are being pushed and you control it quite like a rwd car and hold it.

When in an evo with AYC pants fitted it often feels horrible. Andy's with the switchable settings is probably a bit better but from the passenger seat seems to still want to sort itself. When watching them on trackdays they seem to have a very different dynamic to cossies with a lot more happening from the front. Not saying it does not get the job done but it does it in a way that is nasty feeling to your inputs. The same can be said for the GTiR i owned.

This is the only low point on evos though, maybe i need to drive more to change my mind For a track car it should be a no brainer which one to choose if you want track time......

If it was my money - i would try an RS evo properly.

Clutch and brakes are wear and tear item's mate.

I don't know a manufacturer that would give a warranty on them, unless its a clear fault with the product.

Thats like a warranty on tyres wearing out

I've never had a cossy, but i've had 2 evo's. My current is probably around 500bhp, standard gearbox, GSR rear diff, etc etc.

i think a better way he could have put it is if you had the evo for a week or so to get used to it you could probably do a better time in the evo over your escort.

Quick Reply: Evo 8 or 9 what would you pick and why?
