The standard Rs turbo back in 1985 did not overheat mate, so something somebody other than ford has fitted has caused the problem, or something is worn out. Best you give us some more details Ben...

Especially this time of year??!! If it's over-heating now, whatever will it be like in the Summer??!!

Fit a brand new or recored standard rad before you do anything else. That's your problem I bet.

sorry, its is running about 200bhp@18psi done by your good self at MSD. i think the main problem is that it has a front mount cooler so cuts off alot of free moving air, i've fitted two 10" kenlowe fans and a manual switch. it only tends to happen in stop start slow moving traffic?

Mine has a front-mounted cooler and 2 fans, which switch on as they did as standard. Mine gets nowhere near over-heating, so if yours is any different it is likely that the rad is buggered.

Honestly, with a full-width cooler, a new rad really is the way forward.

Has it always doen it Ben? I woukld be inclined to try a new stat first. We have lower 82 deg Units ythat help, but as Christian says, it may need a nice new core.

If its done it since fitment, check the fans arent wired backwards. A VERY common mistake.

a job for new year then i think. it actually burst its header tank in summer so not good! think i might get the air tec rad to go with the cooler then.

just out of interest what sort of mpg do you get on average, i put in Ł30 a week and get around 140miles for that. works out about 23mpg?

I have a full width GRS, with brand new radtec radiator, relatively new waterpump, 82 degree stat and fan switch, and see no overheating issues during normal driving at the height of summer.
However, it cant do a 20 minute track session in summer without getting out of hand, even with holes cut in the front bumper...

How are your fans mounted? between cooler and rad, or on the front of the cooler?

fans are mounted in between rad and cooler, definately spinning the right way and do bring temp down, just occasionally gets out of hand like you say.

the radiator has no leaks so not sure if its broken really? dont fancy spending 200 quid on a gamble.

Same as mine- fans inbetween.
I have a feeling that radiator and intercooler as close together as possible with fans on the front may be the better option for engine cooling...
Might try it out next year

dont do it mate, had it this way before and the problem is twice as bad, fans dont cool rad and rad just heat air in intercooler! it was a nightmare!!

how do you know if the rad is buggered?

Oh well, might not bother then... Anyone else got opinions on this? (Best place to put the fans)

You could flush the rad through and see what comes out. Also just check it visually, what sort of condition is the core in? Are the fins ok or are they all bent over or rotting away? Is it showing any signs of leaking?

I would fit a new/recored STANDARD rad. Not an Alloy one.

not too many other ways you can have them really, not exactly the most spacious engine bays are they! the rad looks a bit worse for wear to be honest, fins are a bit bent and rusty. think i'll test the stat see what that shows then maybe put a new rad on it.

its a constant battle in my mind of should i keep it or sell it?

As stu says try a new stat first yours may be fucked if that dont sort it flush the rad and if it's still the same then think it will be time to buy a new rad

What boost are you running? Have you done any trackdays in hot weather with that set up? Just out of interest.

Mines fine most of the time, its just sustained hard use on hot days that knackers me up now and then
Croft 2007 being the latest case- i would start a session, after 5 to 10 minutes slow down (cool down), then go flat out again for the last 5.
