Default Advice needed... overheated and now poorly 1.3 (Valencia)

My Girlfriend's 1.3 MK4 Escort, minter, 40k on the clock.

Well, it overheated yesterday due to a sticking thermostat... stone cold guage and heater etc while it blew its top....(she only drove it for about ten seconds while it was chugging and steaming).

New thermo fitted, coolant and flushed out.... all seemed well apart from a ticking noise from the top end slightly louder than a tappet.

Took it for a drive, but down on power, gets worse within a few minutes, feels like its almost running on 3 when under load above 3000 RPM.

Going to do a compression test on it today..... any ideas/advice/theories most welcome!

Could be worse I suppose.... did simply a head gasket sort yours out?
No need for skimming or anything else?

Well that was weird..................

Did a compression test and number 4 was running about 1 bar under, also it sounded like the rattling was coming from this end.

Took the rocker cover off and found that a pushrod had become dislodged and was clouting the rocker arm!
Took off the whole rocker assembly, checked everything for damage, all ok, put it all back together, took it for a long test drive and it's all fine now!

I have no idea how this managed to happen, but I'm damn chuffed at not having to take the head off! Any ideas why people?
