Default E39 M5, E46 M3, 530d, 330d.......

Just wondered if any owners of the above could post what mpg their getting, preferably what you get on a motorway run if possible. Im thinking the M3 and M5 may be pretty similar?

Would probably be doing between 500-1000 miles per week so would be interesting to know what the differences are and how much would be saved with the diesel.

Would also be interested to hear what you get urban driving and combined and how much you do of each.

Cheers.

Got an older M3, but for those miles a 330D remapped would (obviously) give best mpg, and give the E46 M3 a hard time.
Be best motorway and overtaking car with all that torque.
Bmw are making some of the very best diesel engines lately.
At the least would be 15mpg difference from M3/5 to 330/530D, amount to a pretty penny on that mileage per week.

If economy is your primary goal, then of the M cars, the M3 is waaaay better than the E39 M5 (trust me!!!)

Mine will do about 24mpg on a run, but the average tends to resort back to about 19-20 mpg. I spend quite a lot of time on big A roads and Mways, and I do a lot of miles also, so that will probably reflect your mileage.

My next door neighbour has an E46, and his on a run will do about 28-29 mpg! Totally not fair!! LOL

Mind you - mine is waaay more comfy!

Totally different cars to drive!!

You can't pick between them untill you have driven them IMO.

Really that low, i was sort of hoping that the M's would do over 30 on a run. , that way i could 'sort of' justify getting one over a diesel.

Looks like the M5 is certainly out of the question if it gets less than 25 on a run though.

So basing the 530d/330d on 45 mpg, then the M3 would use about 50% more than those, so as said that would be a big chunk of money over the year.

The diesels looking like the sensible option then, which i knew deep down anyway really and certainly sounds good with the re-map.

Graceland
Rhys

How much was the re-map and what sort of power and torque increases have you seen roughly? Also, has the re-map actually made it better on fuel now to when it was standard?

Cheers.

Ive driven M3's and 330d/530d's mate, but not an M5. Of course id like an M3 or M5 over the diesels but doing big miles its obviously going to save me a big wedge of money, which seems the sensible option.

I was hoping the M's could see mid 30's really though.

I know mate, ive driven standard ones and given them some stick and the diesels power and torque really suprised me.

Must go really well once re-mapped.

My cousin has a chipped E90 330d, and it is as quick as his brothers 335i petrol!

Also, he tells me there is a turbo convesion available from the states that increases the power yet further!

Indecent mpg with proper power.

My only comment is that I would prefer the auto if diesel due to the utterly aggravating short gears that are required by diesel engines.

Yes they are better on MPG when just cruising at normal speed! So nice cars, imo for everyday practical car i would say the 330d is better than M3. And imo look at auto, thats where im going next i think

Hmm, suppose you could get an M3 and LPG it - very good engine for it.
Then you'd effectively get the mpg of the diesel, if not a touch more on the motorway.

I'm leaning towards these 6 pot bmw diesels now, so much torque, and how often are you flat out in all the gears as opposed to one/two gears to overtake some dawdling twat - which is where diesel would be nicest.
Mileage to performance ratio is excellent on these.

Thanks mate. Thats pretty impressive, are the facelift 330d's the 204bhp versions?

I still can't believe the E46 M3's do 30mpg. In all seriousness do they?

Course they can, good power to weight so effortless, and relatively frugal if driven gently.
Won't get much more of course as still a big engine to fuel, but not as bad as people seem to think.

Thats not that bad really mate. Is that driving like a granny on the long run then or do you think you could get a bit more if you tried?

C4llyT, i was actually thinking of the LPG on an M5 or M3 earlier. Im not sure how well it would work on performance cars like these, or even if its possible, but it would certsinly be good to have decent performance AND economy!

Depends if you listen to the experts, or the uninformed....

The M3's with high PCP's (peak cylinder pressures) are better suited than your average power output shopping trolley car for LPG.
Someone on here has one.

For real world performance I'd have the diesel.
I've an older M3, and flat out it doesn't hang about, but for overtaking compared to a remapped 330d you'd have to be above 5000 revs, or squeeze the throttle a bit at 2000 in the diesel.
Look what Carl has posted - was a vid on youtube of an M3 Vs 330d, dunno if still about, but nothing much in it.
Be nicer car to do a lot of miles in I'd think.

Followed one the other day on a 60mph A road, overtook the car in front in about a tenth of a second, was mindblowingly quick, never seen anything like that.
Really are the kings of overtaking, which these days with cunts doing 40mph everywhere, is what you need

and does a late 13 sec quarter stock, capable of a mid 13 stock if conditions and my 60ft was better!!

Midrange is unbelievable!

Will let you know after the re-map tomorrow how she goes

C4llyT, definatly worth looking into in more detail then.

xr2i-carl, that sounds very impressive!

Regarding the diesels, does anyone know the change over years when it went 184bhp to 204bhp, both on the 530d and the 330d?

Cheers

with auto, (but steptronic and paddles) with a slow 60ft i did a 13.90 @102mph

beat a CSL that day to, was a slow day i feel. was very hot and i did no tyre warming (also worth noting she only had 3k then, diesels loosen up and get quicker after some miles)

definately a mid 13 stock in there, but wont ever know now as getting re-mapped tomoz

driving at about 80/90 ish.

im sure i read some where that the m3 runs a closed loop system like stu developed as standard, not 100% on that though

its not all about economy i think just look at the look of the M3 out of the box. gorgeus looking piece of kit.

Whats a 330d remapped like to drive? Have driven a standard one and tbh was quite impressed, so much so I'm thinking of buying one....but what would it be like after a remap?

It's between that and getting something 2ltr 4x4 turbo (Probably a Scoob Legacy B4 RSK).....I guess the scoob would be more fun, but the BMW the better car?!
