What is a harmonic damper?

I can imagine what its supposed to do - but not what its actually like and fits where in the engine/bay?!

Martin, would you think its worth me going for the slightly taller 5th gear.

with the engine revving 8k+ on the solid lifters and being on 3.9 ratio's.

im not after top speed runs like some of you guys - i dont have the balls for it, but just curious if the way the rest of my car is if the taller 5th will be a better option?!?

Slightly off the main topic of gear ratios, but relevant to the top speed conversations:

http://www.conti-online.com/generato...s_vmax_en.html

Continental make tyres where are approved to 225mph

If you search about for the Jems built Yb for a drag racer abroad you'll see it has one fitted.

IIRC that engine made 1100 + hp and revved to something NA engines rarely go near

What does/did Karls shortened YB rev too? I recall Dingy posting a picky of his old stack which had been in Karls and the peak recall was something mad like 9600 IIRC...................

I jus tapped mine into the gearbox man calculator & I think I got something wrong

Got the T5 ratio's off his web sit wit 3.64 final drive & it says I change from 1st to 2nd @ 53 mph ! THAT don't happen !

But it did say I could possibly do over 190mph

Needs to be a well worked out package to get up to the 190s Jb...

Things you need to look at are peak power...needs to be over 7k
Intercooler...charge temps needs to be kept under control

and lastly you need about 550-580 bhp

Just used the gear table on that site looks like using the bara longer 5th with standard diff ratio and my tyres 5th is 207 and 4th is 168.
I wonder how much i could pull with around 450 bhp ??

it's only the 5th gear thats slightly different to the rest of the box looking at the ratios compaired to the standard box

i dont think many people could do 160 even around a track

defo make a differance to top tho as everyone can see

but the normal bara 5th is better suited for track or road

thats my thoughts anyway theres the lower ratio 5th if you need it anyway no extra cost

the way i look at it atleast its a decent box and better than fook all

More than that I suggest Ade did 185.5 with 540 Dynoed & correctly geared. Suggest 580/600. Only 3 Cossies timed past 190 a very select band.

I know talk is cheap and all that Rod and Im in no way trting to take anyhting away from any of the other guys but mine must be there or very very close with my power.

On a dry day with the right line and no mirrors etc it would do it i think..

what you reckon?

Nice spin Marco! The 5th gear is not slightly different it's a world away for people that have calculated figures based on what they have been sold/told But having said that the shorter 5th is likely to be better for circuit use.

Yes it's a 'decent box and it is better than fook all' but what do you mean by that?

I have tried to be honest with my findings and have come clean as soon as I realised that the ratio's were not std, my website has beed updated too.

Yo Martin

i wasn't trying to spin , the box was designed as a fast road/ track day box thats what i meant by better than fook all, as it's a good descent box

I allways thought they were standard ratio aswell and never thought nothing of it untill dave did his top speed run we wouldn't have known

it theres any consolation if a punter wants a box , you can offer the lower 5th

like yourself i wouldn't misslead anyone , fair play

cheers marco

Does that mean while my box is out i can have the taller 5th put in?

When i placed the order for my Box I didnt skimp and go for the £3000 box i went all out and got Martin to get the Best box he possibly could at no expense spared

The reason i went all out was due to the fact i intend on having a Monster Engine that will be used for the Track, 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile and Top Speed Runs so where does this leave me?

I can tell you when I phoned Martin he was more shocked than I was at the findings , I geared Daves car to do about 196 a few 100rpm over peak Power cos that is what his Power is likely to pull & of course he came back complaining of a misfire which turned out he was sitting on the Limiter, Mark looked at me the look said it all. I went away for a sulk & calculated it must be a .86 5th gear & it turned out to be so.
Can I state that Martin was misled by Bara not him misleading anyone they did not Know what the 5th gear was when Martin asked what standard meant to them, think he did his nut. Closing word, Dave is more than happy with the service & back-up that Martin has provided & I for one expected nothing other than that.
Cheers Rod
