My new Asian Water Dragon - updated 01-09-08
finally finished setting up the vivarium today so popped down to Coast To Coast in Darlington and picked up a 7 week old Asian Water Dragon, our very first reptile
not sure what sex it is yet as they cant really be sexed until they're quite well grown but he/she is called Puff god knows if its magic, but it is a dragon and it does live close to the sea
here it is in its top of the range luxury travel home
beginning to settle into its new vivarium
peeky boo
basking at 32 deg C on a thick branch
not the best pic of its vivarium but all i have to hand at the moment
and finally a video of it eating its first meal... a yummy waxworm

The vivarium/cabinet is bigger than in the photo, since it had to be partitioned into 2 sections to stop the dragon becomming stressed due to the large area inside, so in about 6 months or so the partition will be removed and the interior redecorated.
This is the full viv and cabinet, around Ł170 delivered from t'internet, but its 4' tall 3' wide, plus the cabinbet height.
Then you need heat a lamp for the basking spot, a thermostat to control that lamp, a lower tubular heater to keep the night time temp constant and a stat to control that, a UVA/UVB light controlled by a timer, some interior decoration (hides, water pool, greenery, bark substrate for the floor etc) think all this set me back about Ł200

Love it Ben, my mate has just got two little lizards and they are wicked! In about 4-6 weeks they are already happily chilling round the living room and go to sleep on my mates shoulder!

Joking aside, I think it looks loveley. I have had my African Mombassa Starburst Tarantula a year this month, well pleased, got a Goliath Bird Eater on my shopping list for the new year, now I know how to look after them..

Definitely looks like i was panicking over nothing yesterday, it's ate another worm tonight, straight from my fingers then after a brief snooze after tea its been quite entertaining, jumping around from branch to branch
sad to hear that
yeah theyre meant to prefer shiting etc in their bathing water, which isnt too bad as it leaves the rest of the vivarium relatively clean it does as you say mean you need to change the water at least daily.
Just checked with him Ben and he's got a male and a female Bearded Dragons!
class, cant wait until mine likes being out in the living room with me
COMEDY DAN couldnt be keeping anything like that, i'd be shit scared if it was loose in the same room as me never mind actually touching it etc
vroooom ptssssh they eat crickets, locusts, mealworms, waxworms as treats because they're a bit fatty, pinky mice once a week when they are capable of eating them.
Fiddy UK nice setup you got there, like the look of beardy's

Neil@FastFord did you mist your viv regularly to maintain the high humidity the dragons need? Not seen mine in its swimming pool yet, little bugger must go skinny dipping at night

Fiddy UK haha, that's a nightmare scenario
Either my dragon cant see/physically catch the crickets/locusts or he's not hungry, as the 2 i put in yesterday are still there. He must've been hungry today while ive been out at work because when i fed him a mealworm tonight he went mad and munched it straight away.

Mine was funny feeding when i first got him, took him a while to settle, now he eats like a horse. dragons dont have the best eye site iirc, mine was funny getting the locust when i had plants in the viv, they used to hide and have his life, so i took them out, and now once the locust are in the viv, there lucky if they last 5 mins. and how big are the locust your giving yours, i was told they cant eat enything that is wider than there head, and with yours being young, his head wont be that big, could be a mile off mate, but thats what i was told.

theyre only small locusts that ive got, i tried him on crickets first but no joy with them, then the guy in the shop said they prefer locusts to crickets and mealworms to locusts.
Ive heard the same thing about the ratio of food size to head width, theyre definitely small enough for him to eat comfortably. It may just be a case of settling in after all.
At least i know he is eating tho, even if it only mealworms at this monent in time with waxworms as treats Can work on everything else over time.

a little update because i feel like it... he's feeding well now, nice not having to worry about it
here he is about 2 weeks ago exploring his viv, climbing up high onto the foliage to eat a morio worm.
i think he's started filling out too, he seems a bit thicker in the body, couple of pics taken today

Looks smart
Mine too.. It was very small though when I got it, never started eating and just died. I tried desperately to get it to eat and even tried force feeding it near the end!

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
Nice Dragon, just bought my first snake in about 10 years today. Used to have loads as a kid but just did'nt have the time for them so sold them all.
Just bought a young Red tailed Boa today, its about 3-4 months old. Hoping to get a new collection together again, next up is a royal and then maybe a breeding pair of Bearded dragons.
