The 8 valve engines are better with miles on than the Ecotecs in my experience [for the petrol]. The diesel engines ae great, but Can suffer with head gasket failure.

The breathers in the rocker on the 8 valvers get blocked and gunk up, so if you see what looks like the gunk [like if the head gasket is going] under the oil filler cap, check the water as well [make sure there's no oil in there] as they normally just need the rocker taking off and to be cleaned through.

Ecotec?

Bit unfair at those sorts of mileages though as they'll either be TOTALLY fucked, o have had all the problems ironed out.

Guarantee if you took a dozen of each, there'd be less rust on S plate Astras than equivalent Escort!

They're just old cars now though mate to be honest, so check everything you would on any other car

ecotecs have a bad name for no aparent reason

im an ex vauxhall tech and i find them to be very reliable

8v's on any engines are known to be more bullit proof, but 16v's are more economic and faster

any astra on 100K should be ok as long as it has a decent service history,

I sell loads of these... to be honest if you're looking for a car of that age and price bracket you cant go far wrong. Paddy has covered most points. Check for broken springs too.
