Default Vauxhall techies

A mate of mine has meriva 1.8 petrol, the engine light has come on and car wont drive properly, i pressume its in limp mode or whatever you call it, someone has told him its emmisions fault, could this be right? any help or info much appreciated

could be anything, best do get it on a diagnostic machine to get the answers

I dont think the newer ecu's will let you "paperclip test" them like the old ones, so as above, get it onto a diagnostics machine or you will spend a fortune replacing things that you wrongly guess are the cause.

That was my first thought, he read somewhere that the light that has come on means emmissions and also got told that it was a either the cat blocked or damaged etc or a sensor, the guesses were done without a machine so i thought i would see if anyone here could help, looks like its diag machine then, thanks for replies

Coil packs and EGR valves are common on Vauxhalls. You won't know for certain without extensive testing or diagnostic equipment.

sounds more like EGR symtoms to me

egr not over common on the z18xe tho more common on the z16xe or z16se i would say could be a o2 sensor gone down usually number 1 sensor or as said mabe the ignition module
