I thought it was if you were deemed to be driving carlessly and smoking , not just smoking

That's already the case in France, you apparently need to have two hands on the wheel at all times, except when driving requires you to take a hand off the wheel, like changing gears.

Won't be surprised if it came over here too

Another case of targetting easy victims for what is probably the least of all contributions to accidents, etc...

How'm I meant to change the stereo

But in all seriousness, I do think that any point you are taking your hands off the wheel other than to change gear, your concentration is slightly elsewhere...

i.e. not dropping your newly lighted fag on your lap

rather than fully on the road

I do appreciate that smoking in the car can be dangerous (spl?) but so is talking to others in the car...changing the radio...going through the glove box for a cd..adjusting the climate control...

It's got to be a pure money raising exercise

if the police see you driving i a dangerous manner and you just so happen to be turning the radio or sparking a fag or scratching your arse or whatever else they interpret ther uels to be, you can be pulled over and collared for it

mobiles used to come under this category but i believe that they have their own little section in the highway code or whatever book or rules the police use nowadays to get their figures up

Smoking in a company car used by more than one employee is now illegal in England.
It's a pity they couldn't get their legislation to match the rules already in force in either Scotland or Wales, so now we have to put a stupid no smoking sign on our company cars as we cross the border.
Some United Kingdom!

The policy on smoking in the car hasn't actually changed. The only difference now is they can fine you for it... You've never "REALLY" been allowed to smoke, eat, drink, etc behind the wheel, just now you can get fined.... Your not even allowed to adjust the stereo or heater controls etc, as the highway code insists two hands on the wheel at all times whilst in motion...
