seems very expensive what gains over a standard rear beam. How much would it change a car eg lap times

If you cant see that this item is probs the best rear beam money can buy and is better than any after market setup available then why are you even looking at such items

Absolutely true , in fact collins have upped the price this time to attract offers , the axle parts alone make about £3000 when you need them from Dewitts .
