The piston drops, the pressure in the cylinder decreases and therefore the pressure from the atmosphere pushes air into the cylinder.
Couldnt be more straightforward IMHO, its just basic Physics.

PS
Of the ones I got wrong, the only one that when I read back I dont go "oops, should have read it properly not answered them all really quick by browse reading" is 7
To me that picture of C, is reverse, one gear is turning the other one backwards.
In fact TBH A and B are also reverse gears IMHO, just ones with a ratio as well as a change of direction.

Given that they are fridge engineers in particular, im amazed that they would make that mistake, as pressure is like HEAT, it is only viewed as moving from a high state to a low state.
Ie you dont add coldness to an item, you take away heat from it, likewise with pressure and airflow, if it moves from B to A then you dont say it gets sucked in form A to B, it gets blown from B to A.

No, not being clever, just I had 4 of them with me this morning and 2 of them were arguing its the piston dropping that causes suction which pulls air into the engine....

its semantics from an english point of view, but physics is very fixed on its opinion of what happens.

92% good quiz though ian
thought question 7 was confusing as per chip
made a wrong click on 17 (25 kg instead of 50)
couldn't be arsed to think about question 44 properly by the time i got there
couldn't see how getting 3 wrong answers would give 92%, but as there is 2 wrong on Q7 it must count as 4% - but it's not possible to get only 1 out of 4 wrong
