Default Sky channels lost, NOW FOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have "lost" channels 180 - 184, sky tell me that the dish has moved, which is odd as it is not somewhere easy to get to, and has been ok for 5 years up till now.
I get the message NO SATTELITE SIGNAL IS BEING RECEIVED, seems odd unless they use more than one satellite as all other channels work ok.
Any SKY installers here ? can you please shed some light for me, as they want £65 off me to realign it which seems steep, robbing gits after all it's £45 a month anyway.

probably your lnb, on its way maybe, cant see the mini dish moving if its put up securely or has it been knocked?

or on the cable at the lnb, the tape or boot letting moisture into the cable?

sky box could be on its way out aswell, can you plug another one in ( borrowed) to check the channels?

new lnbs, are a few quid off ebay!

Normally if 1 or 2 channels go missing, it could be due to the dish being out of alignment, even very slightly, but the guy at sky should have checked the frequency's of the channels, and if they are coming from the same transponder because if it was due to alignment, all the channels would have a relatively similar frequency.

It doesnt go by channel numbers though, so if i was able to check, i'd probably find that chnl 180 is totally different from 183,183,184

The signal test screen will probably be fine because you are still picking up a good enough signal for the rest of the channels.

If the usual unplugging has failed, and sky have gone through the lnb reset etc, then there aint really much more over the phone they can do. As mentioned above, try to get hold of another box and plug it in. If the prob is fixed, then it's your box, if not, it's probably the dish.

I wouldn't pay the £65 straight away, might be more worth while calling out a private engineer to assess it. Probably wouldn't cost you £65 and if it is alignment, he surely wouldnt charge too much to fiddle with the dish.

If he assesses it and says somethings goosed, then you could pay the £65. Covers all parts & labour. The only down side is you'd only get a further 90 day gaurantee on the job.

If the people at sky didnt try all the reset's, here are a couple of things to try.

LNB Reset:

1. Press services on the remote
2. Select "System Setup"
3. On this menu, hit the keys "0", "1" then "select" to take you to the "Installer Setup" menu
4. Select "LNB Setup"
5. Highlight "LNB Power Supply" and turn it off by pressing the left/right arrow keys. Do the same on "22khz Command"
6. Select "Save New Settings"
7. This will take you back to "Inst Setup". Wait a few seconds and go back into "LNB Setup", press the RED button to reset everything to "on", and again "Save New Settings"
8. Select "New Installation" from the same menu
9. It will give a message "Please make sure your dish is correctly aligned and viewing card inserted". Press "Select" twice.
10. It will now say "Now Scanning Please Wait"
11. Once it's finished, it should say "Channel Line Up Complete"
12. Press the "Sky" button to return to your viewing, and check your channels.

If that fails, bung it out the window!

Thanks everybody, some really good advice here to try, and hopefully might save me some pennies, you need em with cossie's, I have found that they are quite good at sapping money all the time!!
Hopefully I will get it fixed but FIVE live US is I THINK the one's I am missing, sure I still got ITV 1+2, watched corrie repeats the other night, only so I could tape em for the other half.
Once again thanks all,

that's a good bit of info there mr lad

can you tell me how to set the volume controls up on the telly with the sky remote as well?

a lot of people have said that the sky remote won't work with the newer plasma screens as you need a level 8 control, but i've only got a level 6

Phone up and threaten to cancel, they will be round like a shot.

They wanted £120 to come move my dads dish as they say that it was in the wrong position (even though its been up since 1998 when digital first launched with no problems..installed by sky themselves) and that was why he was experiencing poor reception.

My dad phoned up, said he was sick of it and wanted to cancel and was going to virgin media. They were round the day after next to fit a new box and new dish

Sky are shit scared of losing customers at the moment. my brother in law works for sky and he says people are phoning up just to take the mick, threaten to cancel, and see what they can get.

I know people who've phoned up saying they cant afford it anymore, and ended up with half price deal for 12 months

I'm going to have to have a go.....im refusing to pay £100 for a sky+ box at the moment so will see what i can get them to do with one of them

I forgot to mention the above procedure, as said it's a software upgrade, which may fix it.

After checking the channels, with them all being channel 5 related, they may all be coming from the same transponder/be on a similar frequency, so it may be an LNB issue.

There is definitely the option of asking to cancel, seems to work pretty much all the time, but I wouldnt say sky are scared of losing customers. Their customer base is still growing fast, but I think that now that they offer the internet/phone bundle too, people now have more ammunition when threatening to cancel, so this may be the reason for any increased threats to cancel.

Can't really defend against the pricing of the equipment, all I can say is that you're paying for it because you get to keep it if you do cancel, therefore allowing you to continue to pick up all the free channels via digital signal, unlike Virgin etc who'll come take their stuff back

Once this analogue changeover happens, peeps without a digital aerial are gonna have to fork out big bucks to get themselves set up.

if it says No Sat Signal, then your dish is more than likely out

When it's windy here, and my signal starts to go, I just make a note of the wind direction, then once it's safe enough, just go out and give the dish a wee nudge back in the opposite direction - sorted!

I've never needed an engineer for No Sat Sig - touch wood!!

I've now got the dish tightened up so it doenst move as much in the wind

I wish I could do that. Our dish is communal in the building.. It's too high for me to get up.

Feck! Sky wont even come out to that

It'll need to be a private installer, and usually has to be arranged by the landlord.

But as just mentioned there, people are always looking for it done on the cheap, and then complain when it buggers up again.

Just pay that wee bit extra and get it done right!

Thanks to all the kind helpfull suggestions on here it is now working perfectly with it's missing channels again.
All I did was as suggested turn off and leave off for a while, as this was easiest to start with, left off for a few hours and it worked thanks a lot!!
I used to sometiumes have the problem after storms that it would go off with no signal thing coming up but this was on the whole lot, so did not think to try it as I had always done with the complete loss, first time I ever lost just a few, but 25 minutes to sky all they said was out of alignment!!
Once again thanks all.

4.8e had a spare lnb so added it get a music channel on that

the other old sky 60cm dish is on 30w 2 spanish packages, again switchable back to english.

most saturday 3pm football games, tho i dont watch football, but now and then the boys come round for a beer and a premiership game

F1 with no adverts

all 6 lnbs run into and auto switch one cable into the reciever, so you can just flick through the channels
