Default ...which should be faster and where?

M5 E60 5.0l V10 N/A

507bhp @ 7750rpm max 383 ft/lb torque @ 6100rpm

1830kg

285bhp per ton

E55 AMG W211 5.4l V8 supercharger

476bhp @ 6100rpm (500bhp is more likely apparently! as sl500) 516 fit/lb max torque avalible from 2650 to 4000rpm

1760kg

266bhp per ton

What would be faster or feel better?

(sorry just trying to convince myself the M5 is not worth the xtra 15k!)

I *think* I'd go for the Merc, you can no doubt get it over 500bhp I'd guess with a bit of SC fettling and remap??

They do look very nice too.

I'd guess (from what the press say) the BMW is the better drivers car but you're stuck at roughly that level of power, whereas the merc can prob be cheered up whe yo get bored next week

...the E55 can be tuned to 700bhp

...the first thing i would do is get it chipped..this delimits it and gives another 10bhp ...then you can change the supercharger wheel or something and another remap with a filter change and exhaust for anther 80 odd bhp

As you say very tunable if you get bored..LOL

..all the reviews say the amg is the only car you will ever need!

it depends on how many people you had to shoot...

i would have thought the AMG had more drivability... where as the M5 you would have to get high revs to release the hp... it depends on what you want... the BMW is seen as the drivers car, but for Ł15k more, is it worth it?

I'd defo go for the Merc then. Even knowing it can be tuned is almost enough for me. And Ł15k less? yep I know what I'd go for.. rarer too I'd say? I see a few M5's on my travels, but haven't seen a S/C E55 yet.

Gotta be a decent colour though, not silver.. every merc under the sun is silver. There's a nice black one on PH

Well whatever floats your boat I suppose, your car and all that.

Do you still have the earlier E55? Quite fancy one of them myself, also quite like the newer shape supercharged C32 AMG.. They're 350bhp std and 'aparantly' can get to 400bhp reasonably easily.

I would love an AMG engined car one day but the're always attached to boats. The Black edition they have out looks a step in the right direction and looks nice but its still a big heavy beast.

In this situation I'd go for the merc because of the exta torque when you are feeling lazy

Edited to say, but are the mercs all auto anyway

Paul yes all auto with speed shift on the AMG.

...but i disagree about heavy...1760 aint alot heavier than an M3 surely?

I agree the M series is more a drivers car..AMG is for a person who likes to shit themselves

To go against consensus, I'd have to have the M5. I think it looks better, the V10 sounds awesome, remove the limiter, its a 200mph car.

Cheers

Once you have spent the 15k on the mercedes you should be alot quicker than the M5 I would imagine.

obviously ...but i am talking AMG..that version is quoted as 500 bhp whereas the E55 is 476bhp but the same torque 516....so its said the E55 is 500bhp as the SL500 OR 55 AMG

.....AS SAID REMOVE THE LIMITER ON THE E55 ITS A 200MPH CAR ALSO

Merc is ok in the straight line, but I expect the M5 would totally rinse it through the corners.

Those Merc engines are truely awesome though, I spent a large portion of this weekend in an SL55 AMG, with 580bhp on tap after just a pulley change, that wasnt even vaguely tapping the true potential of that engine im sure!

Id choose the M5 though, just cause its a proper drivers car.

Not round bends you wouldnt be, lol

Doesnt cost 15K to be quicker in a straight line though, my mates SL55 AMG is good for 209mph apparently, with literally just a pulley swap!

New M3 is 1700kg+ IIRC and old one is a bit less. Someone had their CSL on the scales on the BMW forum and it was circa 1450kg

But you're talking about the M5 not the M3

So is the AMG not so good with corners or is the M5 just amazing?
