ok may aswell test you guys for ideas

my car makes a grinding noise when turning left... does not happen at slow speeds unless youre accelerating (when you do accelerate it does grind tho) sounds/feels as if somthing is catching.

this started when i went to SCC and had the new rear tyres and camber shims fitted, but i dont see how it can be related to this as the rear wheels dont move.

the car has had brand new TCAs with std inner bushes and poly outer bushes... made no difference (car has not been tracked since by the way, but i'm gonna pop it to kwikfit for tracking later) and this made no difference. has also had all new suspension (gaz coilovers) and it made no difference. at 1st i thought it was maybe coz the car was too low, but ive raised it right up and its made no difference.

i did notice the other day that the front disc on the left hand side appears to have a bit in the middle of it where it looks slightly discoloured to the rest of the disc (is the circular shiny bit of the disc that the pad touches) and my mate said maybe the pads need changing, but dunno if this could possibly affect it?

ive been told that the wheelbearing are ok on both sides, and theres certainly no movement there when you grab n wiggle them.

also (this could be unrelated) but if i listen verycarefully i can hear a wheel speed related kinda knocking/catching noise coming from the car (i think on left hand side) sounds a bit like when you drive over an uneven surface and you get a constant DUM DUM DUM DUM as you go over the uneven bits in the road, just a LOT quiter (it so quiet you can barely notice it) dunno if thats related or not, or wat the hell it is

ive got the ones where you cant tell if theyre split or not by looking at them...

how could the enginemount cause it tho mate, i'm curious

the exhaust rubbed the round bit where the diff joins the prop on my cos, could be that. may look miles away when just sitting there but u wanna get unda abd feel the top of the pipe around that area to make sure

dunno, but when i was doing silly speeds down the a127, i fucked my engine mount, and only ever got grinding noises when i took a corner at highish speeds. thought at first it was the cv boot, have you spoken to Steve@SCC? failing that just pop it in and let em have a butchers

not spoken to steve no, i dont think its anything SCC have done, just coincidence

like i said all he did was fit decamber kit, fit rear tyres, and weld up a hole in my middlebox

oh and clipped up the inner archliners at the front, as they weren't held in proper and were hangin a bit (but ive been over the arch liner again and again and again and it doesnt appear to be touching ANYTHING)

There are small mounting tabs toward the inside rear of the rear arch liners.

Check these arent rubbing.

You can just bend em in slightly to fix it with a block of wood and a suitable hammer

car's been at the garage all morning trying to identify the problem... nothing

they say possible wheelbearing (altho they dont appear knackered) or maybe a steering rack problem?

however i noticed it also happens when the car rebounds after going over a bump so not JUST when turning left

any more thouhgts

car has new just about everything... TCAS, Steering Arms, Track Rods, Shox, Springs, Bushes, tyres etc.etc.

nothing helps!

i had this on my saff and it was the exhaust pipe, it looked like it had loads of clearance but when i turned left and accelerated it just touched the anti roll bar, it took me a month to find it , i moved it by about 5mm and it stopped, i know yours is different engine wise but it may be worth a look

it sounded if the front wheel was hitting the body

that is what threw me off

ive just ralised something

one of the other jobs SCC did was fix the exhaust hanger for the middlebox... so the exhaust WAS moved...

i'll get the exhaust looked at tomorrow hopefully! i hope its something that simple!

when my engine mount went the exhust would touch the Anti roll bar and make a grinding noise when turning right

popped up the local tyres n exhaust place today for them to have a look... the exhaust was v v. close to the diff (bottom corner of housing, not next to moving parts) so they bashed it out a bit to give it more clearance... unfortunately this hasn't helped

doesn't look like the exhaust is catching / can catch on any moving parts at the back.

i'm going back tomorrow for something else (brake pad change) so will ask em to have another quick look at the front etc.

as for knackered engine mounts, mine appear intact... there is some movement when revving the engine, but not a huge ammount... how much should there be?

could a knackered diff cause a grinding noise when cornering? as i know the viscous unit in mine's a bit knackered (so sometimes acts as an open diff) maybe the diff's on its way out?

i really dont wann be replacing the steering rack tho only to find that its not the casue... would rather do the cheepy bits 1st

Jim, I don't know about Ford CV's (I imagine they are all the same on all cars pritty much??), but i had a bit of grit get into it, sounded like it was grinding on something! If it has a rubber gator round it see if its split?

Though this is only going on my experience with vauxhalls!

my sapph did that made a grinding noise when i turned right though,the gators were fine but took them off to find that the drive shaft needed a good clean out and packed it with fresh grease and it was sorted,also my mondeo made a grinding noise and found out the wheel bearing was going tits up,

by the way, i think my rear spring (coilovers) is still touching the inside of the arch, as it still creeks a bit... dunno if thats relevant tho (esp considering it was still doing it on normal suspension)

Most road types of coilovers dont use the offset top mount that Ford and Bilstein intended , thats why they catch .
The Proper shims available for the de-cambering of sierra and Escorts have a maximum effect of 3 degrees , anymore and the ring around the outer drive flange that controls the abs starts to touch the top edge of the swinging arm , maybe this is happening to you . Its very difficult to see or feel unless it touches all the time , a small amount of movement in the bearing may be just enough to "rub " as the car heels over .
May be something else of course , i have had clicking sound s and all sorts of other noises from outer cv's that need re - greasing , could be that

more info:

i beleive it's related to the wheelspeed of the rear left (passengerside wheel)

dunno why i never made the connection as stated above my diff often acts as an open diff coz the slipper's fooked, well when turning left in the wet, full boot it will spin up the rear left wheel

the noise is more pronounced when the wheel is spun up...

so the road speed is low, the front wheels are urning slow etc. but the rear's going v. fast

if you back off the gas (still turning exactly the same ammount) the wheel stops spinning and the grinding becomes less pronounced.

so therefore its gotta be to do with the wheelspeed of the rear left wheel... NOT the front as i first thought...

so, possible issues at the back could be what then? still think its worth taking the de-camber shims off?

the diff will be replaced regardless, so i'll see if thats the prob or not...

but wont be for about 4 weeks tho (waiting for matey to get back off hols)

had the same noise , it was exhaust pipe loose where it bolts to the manifold. as you turn the corner exhaust rubbed on bulkhead!!

i still cant get my head around how the exhaust can cause this noise if its not touching any moving objects?

i'm HOPING it is the exhaust tho...

this is what i had (and posted it earlier) although mine wasn't hitting the bulkhead it was hitting the front anti roll bar but only when the car was turning one way!!!!

well what do we have here, looks like the problem may have been found

looks like the middlebox of the exhaust has been rubbing on the propshaft!

had new middlebox fitted today, still does it (not as bad) but then i dunno how well theyve mounted the box... will have a good look as soon as i can get the car up in the air

Jim, I used to have random noises coming from my cossie ages back, like slight knocking, rumbling etc. Turned out to be worn top mounts. Worth checking out

Why not just run a rear box and leave it at that ?

ok heres a new one... you can push the gearbox up about 4-5inches, it appears the mountthing in the middle of the cradle might aswell no be there as is doing feck all... i think thats fecked!
