this is doin my head in now
its not the exhaust and its not the gearbox mount
BTTT for any more ideas
maybe prop related? maybe diff related?
does anyone on here recon they can diagnose and sort it if they see the car? i dont wanna book it into a different garage only for them to be stumped aswell

bernie can ya sort my crunchy 4th gear for me FOC please, oh and it also pops back out of 2nd when ya aproach roundabouts ( so i try t avoid driving in milton keynes if i can )

ok this has been going on a LOOOONG time now
i'm pretty sure its coming from the tranny tunnel area
had a feel under there today, onlything i can notice that is out of place is the headshielding/soundproofing... the driverside is all ripped off, only got some on the passengerside, but its dangiling loose all over the gearbox/prop. recon it could be related?
its also worth noting that a week after the problem started, some of this headshielding fell onto the exhaust and started burning. it seems like a bit of a coincidence that this wouldhave happened just after this problem arose
please help with more ideas

TCAs
Steering Arms
Rear Beam etc.
Wheel Bearings (i think)
Front Bushes
Exhaust
Diff
Tracking
Tyres Rubbing

The Proper shims available for the de-cambering of sierra and Escorts have a maximum effect of 3 degrees , anymore and the ring around the outer drive flange that controls the abs starts to touch the top edge of the swinging arm , maybe this is happening to you . Its very difficult to see or feel unless it touches all the time , a small amount of movement in the bearing may be just enough to "rub " as the car heels over .

ok, another opionion given lastnite:
coming from FRONT LEFT and deffo something that moves touching something (ie a wheel or other spinny thing)
no evidence of the tyre catching the wheelarch tho

Yeah, I checked that last night.
Can't check the rears as it's too low to put your hand between the arch and tyre, BUT, I think it's coming front left.
Would like to see it in daylight though Jim

I know from experience that it's very difficult to spot on the wheelarch liner where a tyre has been rubbing. Even after taking both front liners out, it was still hard to make out where the contact was - but it was the solution to my problem. My suggestion - take out your front left liner and see if the noise disappears (only a few screws with the wheel off, nothing more).

I'll bet its the brake disc rubbing on the caliper carrier. Do you get more brake pedal travel after cornering?

i've had new pads fitted since with zero difference, but would you expect this to be irrelevant? also if it is this any ideas how i would diagnose or fix?

Jim - What front hubs are you using? (out of interest)
Right, imagine there is play in the wheelbearing. The disc would be allowed to move in and out. This would push the piston back into the brake caliper when you corner hard. The next time you apply the brake, the pedal should travel more.
I've had this twice:
Once on my old S2 (The hub drive flange had shattered - all that was holding it together was the bearing races), there was no detecatble play at the roadwheel - I had to strip it down to find the problem.
The other time was on my cossie - The hub nut came loose, and it had the same symptoms as I describe above, only this time spotting it was esy cos the wheel wobbled like a bastard
Both could have been nasty lol

ok i just did the following to test:
driving @ about 5mph turning left...
little grinding (normal)
driving @ about 5mph turning left whilst left foot braking
LOTS OF GRINDING
has to be brakes related then! as its the only spinny thing that hasn't been examined!!!!
ps i use standard sierra 2wd hubs (non-cossie) and 4x4 cosworth calipers/pads (i assume 4x4 cos discs, but ive never checked)
i will examine the front brakes on saturday whilst we're playing with the rear suspension

well...
ok, 2wd discs and 4x4 calipers... now we all know what problems that causes
so after a bit of this...
now has clearance
STILL FOOKIN GRINDS THO
and now i've got a knocking under braking coming from the front right wheel
ive fuckin had it now SOMEONE SELL ME A 2wd COSSIE ARB, HUBS, TCAs, BRAKES so i can replace the whole fookin front end setup
ps whilst invesitigating earlier i also touched the dics...
i now have a few layers of skin missing on my finger
oh and also my heater matrix SHIT IT on the way home, so big puddle in footwell now
roll on central day eh?

Jim,
Pull the two hoses off the matrix (Drivers side of bulkhead, in the engine bay) and join em with a bit of metal pipe. At least then you can drive the fucker till you get a new matrix in!
Theyre only about 15 quid from the factors but will take you a few days to get the dash off lol

today the exhaust has been off and on again.
now it happens when sitting still and revving engine.
it all adds up the exhaust vibrating back thru the mounts!
soooo fuckin simple
gonna get the exhaust re-tensioned tomorrow n see if that sorts it

ok, took car to exhaust place thismorning, one of the clamps touching gearbox area (think it was touching cradle) looks like it's been "modded" (the clamp) on purpose, so possibly a known problem b4 i got it?
anyway, new clamp and the bloke tried his best to get it out of the way.
now it's a lot better, but not cured.
also the followiung test was carried out...
turning sweeping left... constant grinding
dip clutch
as revs drop its gets quieter and quiter then completely dissapears
got to be the exhaust vibrating them hasn't it!
gonna see about getting a new front section of the exhaust made up that isn't so completely sh*t like mine is!

car's currently at the powerflow dealer having a new front section of exhaust made up (everything from manifolds to middlebox)

I had a grinding sound its was the wheel bearing. there seemed to be no movment, but sounded like there was somthink not right.
took the hub of and the bearing were fooked
