Default stripped bolt..

hi,
Im taking the cams out of my head, and ive managed to strip a bolt on one of the carriers...ive tried hammering a smaller socket onto it but its still just stripping.

Any advice...im thinking the only option is to grind it off?

cheers
Dave
Ps. its a Rover T series head if that helps

i assume you mean you have rounded the hex head on the bolt?

if you have you may get it like you've said, by hammering on a socket (make sure its a 6 point though )

or you could drill through the head with a drill the same/slightly larger diameter than the threaded section of the bolt, this will remove the head and leave the threaded section of the bolt in the head. Then all you'd have to do would be lift of the cam cap and unscrew the threaded section of bolt.

I assume he means it will not come out due to having no threads ?
Id so just turn slowly whilst pulling on the cap and it will have enough thread to lift up, failing that mole grips and pull it out.

wouldnt want to be grinding or drilling fuck all without the facility to flush the entire engine out after tbh. im sure the pickup strainer and oil filter would do their job but its not the point.

id try and split the nut, ideally a proper nut spliter, or a sharp chisel with no plastic or wooden grip and lump hammer. im sure the right sized socket would do the trick belted on though. try imperial sizes, and make sure its a good quality socket. id imagine its 13mm so try beasting a 1/2" on.

try getting one of them aerosol duster things on the cam cap aswell, spray it upside down and freeze the fucker and it might just shrink enough to reduce the force on the nut enough to allow you to undo it with a well fitting socket.

If you have a mig welder handy just weld a nut on top of the fucked bolt,

Or try cuttung a slot in it and using a flat blade screw driver with a spanner on the screw driver.

good luck.
