Default Another one bites the dust........

.......headgasket that is!!!! Number 2 in 3 weeks....not bad going I feel!!!

500miles later enroute to Dingdongs house this evening on the A50.....I watched the temperature steadily rise skywards.......pulled over as soon as it hit 92deg as the fans came in, popped the bonnet & it had split a small water hose.....i thought....well i can live with that.....seconds later its on 3 cylinders!!!

Not yet stripped as I'm on the beers with Ding....but I believe its done the same as the last gasket & pushed the firering out into the water jacket on cylinder one as its that cylinder that its missing on!!! Its not mixing either!!!

Apparently cosworths had similar failing issues with Cometic gaskets when they produced thicker ones.....as a result they stopped producing them!!! Could I be experiencing the same type of failure???

Big thanks to Dingy for coming out in the Mondingo to tow me 15miles back to his......cheers pal!!!

More beer please......and roll on the rolling road tomorrow in a non french car!!! LOL!

more likely a uneven block or head surface
or clamping issue. not the gasket.
or your detting which will eat away
at the gasket fireing ring over time.

Liner heights all even & clearances checked before I rebuilt it AGAIN

Head skimmed AGAIN as it was first time round and it still happened....

New headbolts fitted, retorqued as per Renault instructions & over torqued slightly for best measure by 5lb/ft...

Not detting as it was only running 15/16psi tops, was only using gradual throttle - no higher revs than 6000rpm (rev limit 7000) & the Innovate LM-1 was telling me if anything it was running slightly rich at 11.2 AFR on boost

Next.......

Naah....it didnt say it was Cometic...I said that Cometic made thicker headgaskets that failed due to them being too thick apparently.

Reason I say this is that mine is thicker @ 2.1mm.....not made by Cometic though - made in France.

Liners....possible although you cant really fit them incorrectly & are all brand new - if they move its because they have been produced wrong & if this is the case then they'll be heading back in the manufacturers direction with a large bill!!!!

i've located the problem!!

you only mentioned cometic gaskets, hence i assumed you were using one cometic suffered problems with the old gasket design, no problems with the gaskets being too thick as far as i'm aware

Bad luck Lee

Got nowt clever to add, just wishing you better luck in the future.

Have you considered trying a different type of gasket rather than your French thick one?

MDCos I'm reckoning you've hit the nail on the head!!! I spoke to Christian at the RR day on Saturday & the look on his face when I said I was using a 2.1mm headgasket said it all! LOL!

Si B Next one I'm trying is one made by Victor Reinz which is a standard thickness but uprated. After looking at a few of Dingy's old headgasket collection I believe they also make the GrpA cosworth jobbies.

DaveCos4x4 Yeah its your bastard fault you keep jinxin me - STFU next time!!!!

BRIGSPORT Yeah mate, its been on ebay before - nothing special about it to be honest. I've got some alloys that I've offered to him for spares if the new owner is interested, they match the ones hes got on there

Charlie Chalk Not yet but I'm workin on it!!!

Could do Dave....but really I shouldnt need to, not at the level of power I'm after - never seen these issues on a standard gasket so will give that a try first!!!
