Does anyone know about Subarus??
OK guys, I may be looking at going Jap for a bit, just to see how they are.
Obviously, there is a lot of hype about subarus being unreliable and that, but as I am sure you lot will agree, a car is only as unreliable as the tuner.
Now, I want a Mk1 type subaru, like this:
However, I aint too sure what types are what. WRX, STI, RA etc etc. Can someone give me some info please. What power outputs, what differences etc
Cheers guys

my friend has a 1996 N reg WRX.....supposed to be approx 265bhp
goes well.....been very reliable, although parts can get expensive!
cheap as chips now, he's looking to sell his soon and reckons he'll only get 3k for it....which IMO is a bargain!

That one there is an early wrx and it looks like the 240ps one, that was produced from 1993-1995 and had the red tiger stripe seats. After that the impreza wrx had 260ps and they had the black/grey interior with alcantara inserts in the seats. The extra power was produced by a different ecu (Z4) but the ecu's are easy to swap on the early imprezas.
The sti's of that shape were built in limited numbers of 100 of each of the sti 1 & the sti 2. The sti had 276bhp as standard and a numbered build tag stating it's an sti on the nearside inner wing. Alot of people think that all sti engines have the red inlet manifold but on the sti 1 & 2 that isn't the case. The sti also came with a different interior with sti branded seats to beware of wrx's badged or advertised as sti's. Most classic impreza wrx's are advertised as being sti's.
The wrx RA didn't have a roof vent but the sti RA did. The only real other differences between the 2 RA's other than that are are the engines (power output)
Hopefully that covers what you need to know for now.

Yeah i reckon if you only have £3-£4k to spend, you'll get a better scooby than an evo imo. Plus im not a great fan of the older evo's in the looks department personally.

I own an Impreza (admittedly a newage) and its as reliable as any other car as long as its looked after. It can do 90% of what an equivalent Evo can, but its easier to drive on the road and cheaper to run. Sod having 4.5K service intervals.
Chocolate pistons and bubblegum crank.....yawn

Mate of mine has a black sport turbo wagon thing- looks nice for what it is on gold rims.. he wants £2500 ish for it.
He does a bit of trading and it certainly isn't a shitter... obv for the money it aint great... but he doesn't seem able to shift it and normally with that sort of thing at that money he gets rid quite quick.

how much $$ you got to spend?
There's so many variations you need to start somewhere, and budget is a good place. Also is insurance a problem? as import STI will be a lot more than UK turbo etc.

sti 3 or 4 I'd say. I think that's the last of the sti's that you'll get for that money because the later classic sti's hold their money reasonably well.

Problems usually come from bad diy tuning, neglect on servicing, bad mapping, sometimes crap fuel.
The newage Scoobs are a bit more hardier than some of the older ones, things like MAF's are a bit better as some of the older models MAF's were "fragile" when they stop working it caused running problems which can lead to det, thus turning your engine in to a pile of poo.
