what symptoms for cracked head or block
anyone who has had a cracked head or block on a cossie could you tell me the sort of symptoms you get please
as ive just stripped all my engin einto little pieces
reason the car smoked a lot and was using a lot of oil so had the head recnned with neew guides and seals etc but still smoked after so took the engine out and stripped it
now the engine looks perfectly fine, couple of marks in bearings but just general wear and tear, the rings and pistons are ok, but you can see a bit of blow by on all pistons, bores are fine aswell
took the exhaust manifold off the head and no 1 and 2 are full of oil with a little bit in 3 and 4
also water mix in no 1
any ideas
im going to get the heas cracked tested monday anyhow

I've had both ( cracked head and block), didn't really notice much difference when the block was cracked when driving normally but when you gave it some stick, it would fire the core plugs out under the exhaust manifold!
As for the head, it was ok when it was cold, then when it warmed up, it used to smoke like a steam engine, and pressurise the cooling system really bad!
It also used to misfire when starting from cold for maybe 30 seconds.

I have had a cracked 205 block, As said, it drove fine unless you gave it real stick for a prolonged period, then the temp used to rise and it used to use a fair bit of water. Didn't realize the block was cracked until my mate broke the car . But it was a 205 block using genuine cosworth head bolts with a cometic MLS head gasket, I always put the water loss down to that. It had cracked across the headbolt holes on the section between no1 and no2 cylinders, and no 2 and no3 section, cracks were hard to spot, on both sides of the block .
Hence now I would not EVER consider building a high power YB around anything other than a long studded 200 block, people will disagree but I have yet to see or hear of one of those failing

what breather system have you got? you will need a 3 port system at anything over stg 1, or you will get masses of crankcase pressure and blowby Also, take it you did a compression test and a cylinder leakdown test before you stripped the engine?
What condition is your turbo in? That can throw a lot of oil through the intake if the seals are worn Also worth checking the turbo oil feed and return, if its sludged up oil will build up in the turbo and get boiled and forced past the seals, making lots of smoke and high oil consumption, and check the oil feed adaptor ( the litttle bit that goes between the turbo and the oil feed pipe) is drilled correctly, again, theese can sometimes be far too small, and not allow enough oil to the turbo and cause rapid bearing and shaft wear.

breather system is full spec-r grp a one, breaths from carn, inlet rocker etc
turb is brand new
all gasket are new
headgasket was on correctly
as i said i had the head reconned as the car smoked really bad and used a sump of oil ina couple fo hours but would use the oil out the head first
car never used water or pressurised etc andno over heating
its just smokes really bad lol, and exhaust ports are full of oil
either way a rebuild looks to be on teh cards if my head comes back ok
and it is a 205 block but will be using my 200 i have
