They arent for cornering anyway as far as im aware, they are for better aerodynamics at high speeds, but no they dont make much difference to anything I suspect!

Vortex Generator

They first appeared on the EVO VIII MR400, I believe the aim being to aid stability at high speed.

You would think so wouldnt you with the addition to the newer cars from the dealer. They must think it does something.

Have a look on MLR I am sure you will get a decent explanation on there mate.

They will make a slighy difference im sure, but not one you will notice from drivign it with and without though, and they are there because they look cool mainly.

Thats my opinion, but the MLR might shed more info on it (although more likely just a load of marketing speel, lol)

Chip, you`d be shocked just how much difference they make mate, you should see vortex generators in a wind tunnel....

Concorde would not have ever been able to fly without a small(12" Long)Alloy votex generator on each side of the cockpit...

Its an expontional response, at 70mph, they are going to do NOTHING, at 140 I doubt they are enough for you to notice if you drove the car with and without, at Mach2, im sure they do loads!

I lost mine on the A1 going rather fast They are meant to disturb the air over the rear spoiler, Chip very little on an Evo is there for the sake of it so i doubt that Mitsu have just stuck it on for the sake of it, but how much difference you can notice , who knows maybe you would notice it and i would not subjective i would imagine

When they fell off were you like

"Oh my god, the car has just become mega unstable, whats that sudden dramatic difference?"

Or were you
"I'll just polish the motor, oh, where are the little lumpy bits?"

vortex generators are to disrupt airflow, so on the evo i would suspect it is to increase down force on the rear spoiler.

They can also be used to provide a "shed point" and I would have thought that is what they are here for in this context (like the bmw mirrors I mentioned)

On the back of the packet the diagram shows what they meant to do...

i think you'll find they are supposed to give a extra 7kg of down force on rear spoiler at 100mph.......how sad is it i know that

hmm if i can find the site i used to research these things i'd send it, but basically they REDUCE DRAG ignore all that crap about downforce.... although they do increase downforce due to more air getting to-and over the rear wing
v effective... may be seeing a lot more of these on hot hatches in the very near future

i presume they need a rear wing to do anything at all? (ie the drag thing, obv the downforce thing)

it looks like someones put a spike strip on the roof of the car

im all for downforce/performance enhancement but i dont wanna drive to work in a car that was modeled on hellraiser

erm as i say ill try find the PDF i used for research lol.
basically what they do is make a vortex (basically an area of nothingness) behind them
thus higher pressure air goes to lower pressure
therefore air gets sucked DOWN into the lower pressure quicker than before
therefore it dips lower, quicker into the ditch that the rear window has between that and the bootlid
therefore theres less of a lower pressure area here, and more air gets "sucked" down over the top tip of the rear spoiler
therefore more clean air there=more rear downforce
+less of a total pressure difference/vaccum between the rear window and bootlid= less resistance (i forgot the word ) erm

yea, so higher top speed AND more downforce... by adding little amounts of (resistance) forgot the word again GRR
