They used to recommend Castrol TWS 10-60 ( also known as Formula RS ) - now known as Edge 10-60 - for the M3 and M5

Not a "proper" synthetic though

Its the TWS mentioned above that I was thinking of.

I believe its specifically recomended for the M3 and M5's of that era, but not for other BMW's

does it really matter? cant you just be simple and just use castrol magantex? i dont think it really maters, bet BMW just has a deal with the specific company so they get a bit of cash from it too.

As mentioned by Chip, the correct oil is the TWS. It was designed by Castrol in conjunction with the M3 and M5 engines.

BMW themselves for a while said that the later M5 could be used with the newer oils that they used in the other cars, but then realised that actually, the TWS was still the superior oil for the car.

Pissing expensive if bought from BMW (about 15 quid a litre!!!!), and this is the only over the counter place to buy it from.

I buy mine direct from Castrol Classic Oils. They are found online, and are easy to deal with. The other alternative is Opie oils.

Although many say that Castrol Edge 10W60 is the same (which it might well be!), I still use the original TWS that was specced for the engine. You cant go wrong then, can you!

As an aside, the TWS was imaginatively named (Ten Weight Sixty)

Hi matey

Millers is usually pretty good oil, so it should be okay I guess. Make sure the specs are the same though

I have only ever used Castrol, so cannot comment otherwise.

The E39 M5 drinks oil at the best of time. Rumour has it that if you use the wrong oil with that car the oil consumption goes through the roof (which I can believe). I dont think the M3 has the same curse!
