Personally I woudl either go for an ex rally slag one and trackday it, or if its as a road car I would go for a late one with aircon etc.

what do you want from the car? all out fast road car, slightly modded minter etc etc?

For everyday use, I would go for a 280/ 300BHP small turbo escort,I had one running this for a while, and they are very easy to live with, aircon, leather, nice and drivable with boost everywhere, and tend to be in a bit better condition than big turbo escorts as not many get tuned to fuck and back again. It will be plenty fast and still be reliable.

I used my small turbo as an everyday car for 6 months without a problem

As far as buying one goes, best places are on here, the RSOC board, and ebay turns some nice examples up sometimes, but obviously go and look at the car before bidding.

Beware of places like Junction 28 which (IMHO and many others) are way overpriced for cars that are distinctly average.

Traders on here are also a good bet as they turn up some cracking cars and you get an expert eye cast across them before you even look at one.

Also, take a friend with you who knows Cosworths well, as they can stop you getting shiney car syndrome and buying a nice looking bag of shite Obviously HPI is highly reccomended as is contacting the previous owners to find out as much about the car as you can. As with all cars of this quality, there are a lot of sows ears done up like silk purses, just take your time and buy the best you can.

For an idea, there is a imperial blue one for sale at the moment in the cars for sale room, think it's M7 COS who is selling it, expensive but probably one of the best escorts going

Being a classic example of what people will do to try and sell a dodgy cossie - You need to keep well away from cars like this
