Default 2nd hand car sales men..

Why are they such bull shitting bastards??

They might as well say "thanks for the money, now piss off"

My local one, doing the new owner a good deal, has quoted £1360 to repair a broken cam belt on an 8v 1600 renault megane. He then gratiously offered to pay half.

I quoted him £533inc.

Shame the customer called me for a quote too!

Oh well there's an account lost (what a shame!)

HI Less,

I'm a garage owner too, but mine is MOT's and mechanical.

Unfortunatly I get business by telling the customers the truth and offering a good deal/service, and it works.

Just a shame some people have a lot to learn about after sales care.

Oi Craig, we're not all the same! But it's the few that ruin it for the rest of us

Anyway 533 isn't all that great either for an 8v - it's only a few hours book time you wimp and the valve clearances are so big you could get your beard in between the pistons and the head

Craig, thats why I use you for work and nobody else. Your honest and give me loads of discount Need an MOT & oil and filter doing on the BM'er very soon

I use to be in that game for about 16 years or so until the money wasnt in it any more. Its too competitive and people take too many short cuts to earn money ....

it's only a few hours book time
7.5 hours by icme plus replacing the valves.
2 valves
1 belt
1 tentioner
oil
filter
anti freeze
head bolts
full gasket kit
skim
vat

Jim, that sounds cheap to me no matter how you look at it! Just wait until you have overheads and you can step into the real world.

Nath, its always a pleasure to deal with you.

Eagle's alright too - he brings doughnuts!!!

Out of interest then guys, I understand the need to make a profit and survive in Business so I wont winge or call you rob dogs but....

How much would you charge for a CVH cambelt change and how much would you add on top if it was an RS Turbo?

How much for N/A cvh head gasket on say an RS1600i

I'm just interested in the diff between what I was quoted by my local garage and how much it cost to do myself.

we don't fit second hand engines as they are an unknown quantity.

Our insurance carrier also prohibits us from fitting customer supplied parts without the original bill of sale being retained.

seeing as you are miles away....

Retail on the belt £15ish
Charge to fit £50 very simple job allowing just over an hour but easy to do in half hour once you know what you need.

Nothing different to a 1300 cvh than a turbo so no turbo-tax.

How much for N/A cvh head gasket on say an RS1600i
1600i's have manual tappets so there would be some extra time allowable on that but if it was a hydraulic head I guess £200 labour + parts + skim + VAT.

I might charge a bit more if the head was injected but there is not much in it.

What have you been quoted Shings??

I Thought you were an accountant Jim?

I'm not saying you are!

I know some genuinly decent ones but this guy is so driven by greed and so hindered by lazyness that its untrue.

Thinks he is always right and that you owe him a favour.

After telling me he wanted his account closed, he came in this morning asking why I would not do the Alfa cam belt that was booked in.

The fact the BMW specialist, the tyre dealer and the garage opposit won't do his work just reinforces my views of him.!

I've heard this before and always assumed it was aload of horse shit - designed to sell marked-up parts.
Even the local ford dealer services our bosses galaxy with supplied aftermarket parts.
If its true -then your insurance company are tossers!!
As for a bill of sale.. I spend hours producing copy invoices for workshops who loose/bin/wipe their arse on/write notes on invoices.

it was actually my dad who ticked that box in the insurance agreement.

If some one does ask I tell them I need the original bill of sale whick I keep safe should they need it, and inform them that there will be no warantee if the part fails.

So far everyone has been fine with that.

I've heard this before and always assumed it was aload of horse shit - designed to sell marked-up parts.
Its actually so that should you get sued for a part failing and causing injury, they can trace the part back to the source and transfur the blame. Something you can't do if the customer has not given you the original.

From that point of view I can see the logic. Think we have the yanks to blame for all this sueing crap!

I am an Accountant but I gave that up at the start of 2004 to start the company. I thought you knew that which was why I was confused with your email??

Anyway, I was only winding you up (you should know me by now!!)

If I wanted to wind you up a bit more, I could have mentioned the job you did on my old Cossie lol Ha ha, just kidding, love ya really

If you weren't so far away from the yard, you could do all our MOT's as the people we use are a pain in the arse!! Oh well, can't have everything I suppose.
