Default Pectel Datastream

what is the protocol for the pectel datastream, can this be read by a generic PC and can it presented in a variety of media such as on a LCD screen ?

P8 for example im just interested technically if information is freely available on the datastream and would it be possible to relate the information to visuals or graphics displayed by the LCD.

Are you aware of any documents I should read regarding this ?

There are not any documents available in the public domain.
The L8/P8 protocol is a closely guarded secret.

I managed to reverse engineer it completely myself but that took me
many hours and I am experienced at such things and I do have an insight
of the inernal working of those ecu's so had an advantage.

Make me an offer

Might make it public anyway if Stu wont give me my username back LOL

it's already been done - see the rp labs monitor software that is available through motorsport developments

http://www.motorsport-developments.c...iawmonitor.htm

not too expensive either

i expect so we all want something for free don't we? but apparently there is no such thing

but he'd have to pay out for a screen etc, so to me the existing software onto an existing laptop would be the best solution

Agreed.

I wrote a PC program years ago in Delphi that does it but doesnt
comapre to the RP labs software but does the job nicely from a functional
point of view. Just needs a someone with spare time to complete the
program to make it more user friendly and add the frilly bits to my version.

Was going to make it freeware until Stu started selling his.

the rplabs stuff does not present the information in the manner I wish, although it has use as a diagnostic tool I wish to do a purely cosmetic visual display, if it is possible, in effect have a LCD dashboard with 'attractive visuals' such as simulated dials.
The rplabs stuff although interesting does not fill this requirement due to it being a diagnostic tool rather than having nice visual outputs

im aware of the manner in which the IAW displays information however it appears from my personal perspective to be functional rather than stylised and unless I can either modify the display greatly to suit my needs or the application ships with the source code to enable me to do this....

What is the degree of customisation which can be done to the display.. can you change for example what visuals are shown, display background colours etc

some degree of customisation is possible, as you can see from the screenshot below

but probably not to the extent that you require

if you have a specific idea of what you want, maybe you can put a design to show Stu/Nikola?

Stu,
You have my number but choose not to call me.
Last time you mentioned this on here, I asked you to call me again ????
The unfair way site rules have been applied to me compared to
the way others are treated has kicked the shit out of me so
forgive me for not being too happy at the person who made those rules !
Sorry, just the way I feel as much as I respect you.

What the fuck has this to do with you tw*t ?

Again, the last time I had contact with Brom, I asked him to send
those items back to me and have the PM still to prove it.
That was also posted here on a long since gone thread.
Guess what, no items have shown up after about 3 months and no call
to say why. I can only offer help, if he doesnt want to take it up then
there is fook all I can do.
I appreciate he has been ill in the past but he has had plenty of time
to sort this and I assume he has many friends who can help him out.

Ah, so when i mention i have called you numerous times, left voicemails, and sent e-mails and PM's to you, all completely ignored, you suggest that "I" call you again? Does it genuinely never occur to you to CALL/PM/E-MAIL "ME"? Especially as you promised to be looking into the problem for me when we last spoke?

I am sure this mentality is half your problem mate, i truly am!

UnseenMenace

What do you say about this - I make a public API for accessing IAW Monitor data?

For you, as a programmer, it would mean the following:

There would be a class in charge of fetching IAW Monitor data. Its data members would look like this: double RPM; double MAP, etc. There would be one one method you would need to call whenever you demand new data. The method would fill data members with current data. This class would be declared within the .h file I would supply, and method would be exported from my dll.

If you program in C++, you would need to do this (roughly):

at the beginning:
#include "rpiawdata.h"
....

in initialization stage:
pIAWdata = new TIAWdata();

in your dashboard refresh routine:
pIAWdata->Update();

and then the data members could be read easily:
RPM = pIAWdata->RPM;
MAP = pIAWdata->MAP;

Of course, this all requires that you have RP Lab IAW Monitor running in the background, as its engine would be used to do actual comms and data conversion.

Best regards,
Nikola

Thanks for the kind offer nickrp

However before I attempt what I would like to do, could I send you a email detailing these things as I value your experience greatly and would like to know if you believe what I want to do is possible.

I just do not want to make my idea public yet and have someone else beat me to it

You have NO chance of getting the source off of Nikola, he is fiercely protective of his work. (rightly so of course!)

* EDIT *

Just read the rest of the thread, and the APi he is talking about sounds like a great plan though
