There's gonna be better people than me to give advice on 4wd, but I'm going from my limited experience..............
4wd on the limit is harder to master. I've seen too many people spat out big time by 4wd, especially when they're under the impression that it's a safety feature/allows you to corner faster.
Still respect 4wd - I've had an opposite lock moment in the GTiR, and it felt sooooo different to the RWD I'm used to.
For a start, getting it sideways involves far more driver input than a stab of the throttle ala RWD. I would try it on a few track days, and build up speed gently. You'll find that you can be slightly more brutal applying power mid way through corners, and you wont have to feed it in as gently.
Having said that, you still have to drive the car the way you should to make good progress, and never is "slow in, fast out" more true.
A few other people on here will be able to give a more descriptive input, as it's very hard to put into words abstract seat of the pants stuff........... Mike R will be able to give great input, having gone the same route.

all i know is....
damp roads + roundabout + cosworth = slideways
had some fun in mine .. last night
well its like driving fwd more than anything , im still getting to grips with it tho .. dont take the throttle off fully if you are cornering all 4 wheels suddenly locking will scare you silly .
in cornering hard keep ya foot down turning into it a bit more will result in drifting round corners
get martoon to take you out in it .. and watch what he does

Active diffs fool lots of people into thinking they're great when really its the car sorting it out!

After rwd 4x4 is pretty easy to master, although its best to have had experience in fwd and rwd on limits driving to give a better understanding of changes in grip levels and balance.
How your car will corner and handle is entirely down to the damper spring rates. To get the best from it it'll need coilovers.Ideally it should have a good balance between understeer and oversteer,a little understeers better for most types of corners though!
Getting a 4x4 sideways isnt that easy and it usually happens at high speed by mistake on the road,if it does just floor the throttle and steer smoothly in to the slide, never ever back out.
Smooth on and off the power is the key to being the fastest and sharp inputs just slow them down

RS_31PSI,
Geting it sideways, you seen the way i did it....80-100mph and a quick flick to the left and turn right into the right hand bend, that gets the arse out easy enough.
Once it is sideways, a bit of opposite lock and then point the wheels straight,do not keep the lock on or when they grip it will spin you out.
Have a go on a big wet car park/field etc....this should give you a bit of practice.
Try and do your first track day on a track with plenty of run off and no tyre walls so if/when up cock up you will be o.k.
Brunters is good, you only hit the cones.
Dave.

Just steer and don't lift .... but its practice only that can help you not words.
Sideways motions should never be a mistake - they should be planned for just like any move, you think about where and when to overtake when on track, and in the same manner you should be thinking about introducing a 4 wheel drift to help cornering.
Best bet for you Spiky would be to do a few track days in private, without the added pressures of mates around you egging you on or red mist appearing on track when you see someone you know.
We hire a small circuit pretty near where we live on a quiet afternoon in the week, we thus have exclusive access to it for 2 - 3 hours to do any testing we need.
Im sure you know of somewhere similar near to you and you will be surprised how cheap it can be if its quiet and not being used
