Default DYNO Figures the truth the whole truth......................

Theirs follows a summary of the good the bad & the ugly.

DAY1
Figures made 769bhp @ 7.5k
.....................556ft/lb @ 6k
at 2.5bar on a 40/42 Turbo (the big one)

To me these seemed good but over Supper Mark declared that the Spec was not working as the Turbo was surging & he could not get the boost in to get massive Torque.
DAY 2
I assumed we would return to the smaller Turbo we had bought but Mark decided to build a Hybrid from the two & just try it. First pull of the handle
had Mark more excited than a Jenna Jamison porno.

At 4.5k it was over 600ft/lb & still their at 6.5k peaking at 644ft/lb at 5k.
Power was about 30bhp up on the other combo throughout the range we monitored & the last recorded point was 741bhp @ 6.5k with a probable 1k still to reach peak, yes lads 800bhp from this for sure.(I will post the graph of the aborted run probably tomorrow)

Then the game came to an abrupt halt, the 7k point was 50bhp down & water was seen. Mark said head gasket. The pictures below show the actual problem & reveals Totb was over.

Thats a .005inch feeler the Liner has distorted & is .002inch proud of the block which caused the head gasket to pop as shown below, their is also damage to the head.

Thir isnt a lot of gloom in the MAD camp as Mark got a glimpse of the promised land (he was probably talking about Genna again) the engine Spec will be changed on rebuild as its far from optimum for the Fuel used.

I think I can speak for Mark when I say the next effort will make 800+bhp & 650+ torque off gas. This on the old Swedish exhaust & a spaced rs500 inlet which showed no signs of having reached its limit.

What a dissapointment

really feel for you guys as I know thats the last thing you needed.

Has the failure been caused by a machining fault or just that the liner cant take the power?

Will let Mark answer that but the liner has distorted & moved not sure which happened first.

Not sure yet but it will be checked the liners were spec'ed for over 1000hp but when they made them to big for the pistons the first time it all looks down hill after that ,
I am looking to change comp ratio and a couple of other small things for more power and TQ, Learnt a lot about the engine spec doing this but as a first go it was pretty dam sweet ,
I hope Rod will post the last graph as it looks good, 400ftlb 4k, 600@4.5k,640@5K, 640@5.5k 644@6k,600@6.5k Torque curve sweet .

Rod,
How long before it is repaired (obviously not for TOTB), but for the top speed runs on Piston Heads etc?

Did it do any damage to the head as well, as the damage to the gasket looks horrible ?

Chin up, as it looks as though you have found a cracking turbo combination .

Mike Rainbird

About 2 months min, The head may get away with a skim if not a small weld all pistons look perfect but need to check no4 as this is the one with the distorted liner but I am now changing pistons spec's.

No going up as I would like at least 5dg less Ignition on pump fuel not saying how much or what it was but it was not very low to start with .

hI
The graph the point of liner moving can be seen at 6.5k though 700bhp at 7k with a broken head gasket cant be bad. .

do you not think you're pushing things too far? I mean the figures are very impressive but it's another failure...surely you could just back things off a bit and get the car competing again? Hope it's sorted soon.

Rod,
I have every faith in your methodical approach meaning that the engine will be back bigger and better than even the above dyno figures show .

However, you should have done what I said in my text yesterday, taken it off the dyno and stuck it straight in the car .

When you look at the figs we run it at less power as it didnt have the 200hp nos in it so it was under what it has run so the fault came from something we had done which was the new spec liners in the block,
I am happy to run the engine at close to 1000hp so it was 25% under its max power.

No problems need sorting not avoiding.
Records are not set by normal bhp we need to progress not go back to safe territory. None of the bits that have failed are bits with MADs own input. The Block went after 40k miles when 900bhp was stuffed up its chuff & a liner from a company that does F1 blocks & Specced at 1000bhp has failed & needs investigating & a solution found.
