Thirded.

One question I have is though, who and how did they find out how big our planet (earth) is in comparision to the others? As per Chip's pictures?

scientist today are looking at space much more quickly than they were 50 years ago. The method of looking at light that has bounced from one planet to another nearer planet, then to ours, has sped things up somewhat.

Its impossible to say, and i think that is why this subject is so frustrating.
If only we could transport to other planets to take a look for ourselves

As humans we are governed by time.
This boundary squashes all sorts of theories purely because the next generation may not want to continue the research of the last.
Who knows, in another 100 years, time/space travel will be easy.
Though i think it will more likely that the idea and funding etc going into it today, will be terminated and no one will ever know.

People are becoming more and more aware of the universe than they were 100 years ago, however, people are becoming less and less interested.

by working out how far away the planet is, and also how long it takes to orbit and measuring blue/red waves of light, the radius velocity
theres a lot to consider

People are becoming more and more aware of the universe than they were 100 years ago, however, people are becoming less and less interested.

Its because of the limit to what we can actually explore.

Getting to the moon in the 60s was a huge voyage of discovery, we not know about pretty much every square foot of it, likewise mars etc hold no real mysteries anymore and fundmentally we know there actually isnt ANY point in really going there, its not like we can realistically populate the planet as its not suitable for human life really.

Likewise other planets in our solar system, not really anything *that* interesting about them, so that leaves us looking furter afield, but looking further afield is pointless for us really as there is no way that in the lifetime of a human we can ever reach them unless something very dramatic happens that allows us to travel at far greater than the speed of light!

unfortunately, it is not possible to move faster than the speed of light without distorting time...

a scientist has claimed a theoretical way in which you can appear to move faster, by "folding" space in 2 (rather like a piece of paper) then punching a hole through, slipping through, then patching back together... all through magnets... thats the string theory i believe...

agreed mr chip, the only way we could get to these places is to use a method used in the star trek concept were if you have enough energy you can warp space. as in bend it so that you can greatly reduce the distance to you distenation or as they say use warp waves were by travel on a wave of warped space.

the number add up, but energy you would need to do this in imposable to harnes.

my second point if it could be done some race out there would have done it by now so no it cannot be done.

we had only a few weeks ago sightings of "unidentified flying objects" in the sky... and i didnt actually see them, though it was on the local shitty news etc... and i thought aye right, drunken bastards just talking shit... heres the news report...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAXC97qA32M

anyway i thought nothing of it, but like a few days later i was in the focus st and i saw the lights in the sky, near shit my pants in fairness... so i just stopped in the middle of the road and started takin a video with my phone... they were in formation for a few seconds then went across the sky fast as fooooook.... and no i aint kidding, i properly shit my pants...i got this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAMQyMRnluY

Pause it at 22seconds and u get a good picture of it...

hehe! I AM THE TIME LORD!

as most know power/speed graphs arent a straight line... they are pretty much exponential, which is why it takes 10,000 odd horses to get to 300mph, but 'only' 700 odd to get to 200 mph (aerodynamics aside)

so theoretically you would need an unlimited ammount of power to get to the speed of light...

the only problem with all the theories that we use are mostly based on einsteins theory of relativity... which also states that there should be waves of gravity distotion and time distortion, similar to what you see light do when it refracts... however we havent detected any so far, which means one of a few things

1. they are too small to exist
2. there too far apart that we havent had any pass since the theory came about...
3. einstein was wrong...

oh and there is meant to be an equal ammount of anti-matter as there is matter... i.e. there is -10grams for every 10 grams... and when these colide they cancel eachother out... so how is space still "stable" as such? you would have thought that there would be nothing left if its equal...

Its this law of "equal and opposite matter, and equal and opposite reaction" that means that whenever a swinger spunks on his mrs face, johnny spunks on the swingers wife's face

"we" have made it into space on several occasions

the moon landing is what your referring to
i believe we have landed on the moons surface, however, i cant see why we havent sent up parties to study the moon for longer periods of time since the first landing

Note, I've NEVER mentioned anything about moon landings thank you.

Are you from The South West - UK ?

Re Space Travel..... I prefer the Stargate idea. Wormholes, from one bit of the universe, to the other. Weather it's physically possible or not, is another thing altogether.

Nice on alex mate...

Our official story was they were "chinese Lanterns"

LOL unless a chinese lantern has a booster rocket shoved up its arse i doubt it... as the speed that thing took off at was stupidly fast.

...SORRY GUYS WE ARE THE ONLY LIFE FORM OUT THERE,THIS PLANET WAS CREATED AND WAS MADE PERFECT TO SUSTAIN LIFE.

Forget the other ones...it only needed to be one...you may ask ,why not choose a bigger planet?...Maybe God didnt ever think we would advance this far....the second comming is close...and is much needed to cull this planet before we self destruct it ourself!

....super intelligent people should be culled first imo,as they ruin it for the normal people with there God is bollocks shit

Dont get me wrong i aint highly religous,i have looked into it and found its all feasable....and its science that stinks..but i will leave you with this thought...

LIVE LIFE INSTEAD OF THINKING TOO DEEPLY INTO A TOPIC YOU WILL NEVER KNOW ABOUT UNTIL YOU DIE

Wow this moved on since I left work.

Yeah sorry I meant the moon landing, I think if people still can't agree if this happened, the debate over other life forms being discovered is even worse.

I like the idea of other beings but doubt we would ever know.

(Although I did find that Ant and Dec film amusing)

back on topic, re the sheer size of the universe....

there are about 1 million billion stars in a galaxy, and there are more galaxies in the universe than there are grains of sand on the whole of the earth = a fookin large probability of other life out there - its just that at the moment there is no way of traveling the imense distances to get there.

The scale of that is just SO far beyond what I can even begin to comprehend!

It really is amazing how insignificant our entire planet is!

There's also the theory that other solar systems are like parallel to ours. For instance, there could be another you or me over there but opposite to how we are now.

For instance, Tony Blair probably tells the truth over there and maybe the Pope worships Satan.

At the end of the day, we'll never know because i don't think we'll ever be able to invent something that can move that fast to get to another solar system, and I think if we do then it wont be able to carry a living organism in it with out damaging it/killing it.

Still, there's always the Tardis if anyone fancies TWOCing it for a joyride around the stars

HAVEN'T READ PAST PAGE 3 SO SORRY IF THIS HAS BEEN ARGUED AND MADE CLEAR.

There IS an answer, but we haven't found it yet. The universe is a big place and as they have proved, just finding the edge of the universe takes billions of years due to its size. Either we have missed the light source to view that far back in time or we haven't found it yet.

Its amazing stuff.

I think it all boils down to the fact that maybe there was nothing before 'The Big Bang' but the human mind is unable to imagine nothingness and tries to think of a logical solution to it
