VW Campers

VW Campers
Anyone know anything about them?
Mrs won't let me have another project Ford and she has always wanted a Camper, probably something to do with the Mother in-law living in St Ives Cornwall and us going down there 4 times a year
Obviously rust is the main issue but I can't get my head around the aircooled buisness
We have decided on an early bay as Splitties are crazy money and late bays are ugly
Any experiences or advise?
btw drove one last week, the brakes are shocking

Jeeeeeeesus. What do you want to know??!!
IMO, if you are looking at an early bay, you would be so much better to go for a late 65/66 Split. Bay's have practically NO desirability, whereas a Split will always gain peoples interest.
£500 will easily see it slammed to within an inch of the floor. Whack a 1641cc lump in it with twin-carbs and you have liveable-with performance.
Now, let me go find the pics of my sisters old Rat-look Splitty.......

So true about the split screeners. The unit next to my old workshop was a Camper Van restoration place and some of the ones he had turn up and what he turned them into was amazing!!!!! Some of the customers invoices though were hitting over 12k!!!!!!!! His one was insured for over £20k!!
He has a good selection down there and knows them inside out so can pass his details on if you like?

dont be put off a bay mate,if youve ever drove a split long didtance you will realise they are impractical at best but way cool..early bays are still very desirable and a lot better to drive if you want to do lots of miles,if you do go for an early split(small back window)parts are a lot harder to get and a lot more exspensive...
the engines if treated right are quality..
buy volksworld magazine will help you out lots

We would want to use it for camping and most splits are actually buses
This is more my affordability

Ive still got my first ever car sat at my parents...a 1970 1302s bug, tuned too wheelie With regards to campers tho...I know of a few people with bays and they go all over europe in them, and then there's one lad who sold his bay to buy a splitty...looks mint but he absolutly hates driving it when compared to his old bay..steering wheel is offset to the left making it for a very uncomfortable drive....still look tho

never realised these went for so much, another idea out the window, unless i sell the monte i think id have to have one that had a total ground up resto or you could end up buying a total pile of crap, bet there are some right rustbuckets around of that age,bit of a specialist field i think, still love a split screen though with great paintjob and alloys

I got one a few years ago and the brakes are very scary
it had a 1640 engine and it was deff too fast for the brakes would have felt safer if it had a anchor to throw out the back.

Oh if I won the lottery.
Was talking to a bloke in the services a couple of months back from Pontefract, he has two of em and said that he once saw one sell for £55k!
I would go for a totally restored one... if you are gonna do it either get someone else to do it for you or buy a knacked one and get it sorted yourself.
There's one in the bodyshop at the moment where I've just had my XR2i resprayed and de-rusted... its gonna be sommat pretty special when its done!

Im helping a friend of mine restore her early bay window at the moment, they look much better with the indicators at the bottom. It gets loads of attention despite not being a split screen.
