Doesnt it relate to the size of the ports when people claim " Touring Car spec head "

Ie 27mm Inlet ports and 26mm exhaust ports

i had received the last performance ford magazine, and a sierra is shown, and they had that the car has a TOURING CAR SPEC HEAD ....

so, i am interesting to know what it s mean

At a guess Tony @ Turbosystems could answer that although I have no idea what his username is since the name changes.

Probably quite a lot of pretend touring car spec heads about but if you want the real thing then you will need to get some large amounts of money out.

At a guess I'd think it is around Ł2000 for a proper cylinder head

When I had Karl (NMS) build my fully ported head for my new engine, that was nearly two and a half grand.....New Everything, on a virgin head, but that didn't include the price of the head.

So if you went to someone like Mountune and asked them for a Genuine Group A Cylinder head, I would hate to think what price they'd come back with !!!!

And when you say Group A Cylinder Head.....I'm assuming you mean including the valves. Which alone are around sixty pounds each for the sodium filled exhasts.

I'm also sure there's a few heads around that are quoted as being "Group A Heads" but which probably are not.

There were so many engine builders producing the engines when the cosworth was doing the BTCC, that there's bound to be differences between what one builder refers too as a Group A Head, and what another builder would consider the same.

Yep....that's probably the price for a correctly ported head by someone like Nik, Karl, Mountune etc.

But then you need the valves, springs, followers.....and of course a damned good head to start off with, as you wouldn't want to spend that sort of money, using a head that was on it's final skim

I'm thinking around 3k - 3.5k for an off the shelf Group A Head. (All fully built up, and complete with valves, springs, followers etc and ready to fit.)

Are standard cosworth exhaust valves not sodium filled then??

Standard Valves, Yes, but from what I remember it's only the exhaust valves that are sodium filled...........not the inlets.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that's the case.

mine was 2k without cams etc but all machining on chambers/ports, mods for valve springs etc and a few more helicoils than id like lol proper heads cost big doh

although saying this these cnc heads seem to be takeing off, so i guess a big spec head (without changing valve size) will cost alot less not doing it by hand?

Well Renault 21 Turbo engines have them as standard...the exhaust valves anyway!!!! I'd imagine its a wise decision really considering the heat that they are exposed to on boost!!!

my dads split screen camper van with 911 engine on twin 45's had sodium filled valves lol!!

They are standard in the cosworth engine... (Exhaust Valves). Inlet valves are not sodium filled as standard though.

Just looked on the engine invoice for my sapphire which has a Grp A cylinder head fitted but was secondhand from a touring car, it was built by Graham Goode Racing & was Ł1500 supplied secondhand & that was 9 yrs ago when it was built,total engine build was Ł11k including remove/refit & breather kit & other pipes etc but still going strong 9 yrs later. Previous owner paid, not me
