Default Advice Please!!

I'm going to get a new car soon but I think Im gonna have trouble selling my old one. It's an M reg Vauxhall Cavalier. Engines fine but the rest is kind of falling apart! Theres only a few spots of rust on the outside but bits keep falling off on the inside! Also the bonnet catch has issues and doesn't like to open and when it finally does, it doesn't like to click back into place! Would I be better of buying through a garage and trading it in even though I'll probably be paying more for my new car or going private and just try and sell it?

Any ideas would be much appreciated

if a car is worth 4k private, it will be up for 5 on the forecourt and up for 5.5 - 6k if they are offering a grand for any trade in.

Buy private and flog yours off for a couple of hundred.

It will be worth a tonne as a scrapa weighed in.

If you buy private you have more room to haggle and get a bargain.

The upside is that as yours insn't worth a great deal, you can rag that around until the right car pops up - they always do if you have patients.

I would imagine that not many garages would even take your car as a part exchange im afraid !! Not trying to slag off your car but its usually more hassle than its worth for them to try and shift it on as most cars like this will end up being put to auction, they have to pay to get the car put to the auction in the first place then they pay auction fees etc etc so it can soon mount up and they could possibly end up losing money.

Best thing i would say is to try and sell your car privately even if it is for peanuts and then you have a better chance of buying something else at a better price as always get a better deal if you dont have anything to trade in as dealers always prefer a straight sale !!

Hope this helps.

Thought that might be the case

Try and sell it privately as can always sell a cheap car if its got a bit of tax and test on it, im constantly getting asked by folk to find them something cheap and cheerful just to use for a while as a runaround.

If your Cav is still in the same condition it was in last time i see it then its not all bad....

Be prepared not to get much more than £300 for it tho, mine only got as high as £550 on Ebay

Advertising in the Auto Trader is free for cars under £1000 iirc, stick it in there for offers around £400, that allows for a little haggling.

But i recall the paint work being really flat and unshiney, unfortunatly the saying 'you can't polish a turd' comes to mind but it done well on those long road trips So get J to dig his finest cutting polish out and get it gleaming or of course PM Benn who i'm sure will get it looking new - unless you just want rid even if you only get £50 for it.

A polish, a hoover and some general tlc will see if sell in no time at all.

Good tips for the ad are making sure it has a nice long MOT and some tax, as people that buy cheapish cars like something they can drive for a year and then bin.

Any other help or anything you need doing, you know where i am

Oh and the bonnet catch prob just needs some grease on it and working in to release it a bit.

And the only garages that would take a car of that age and mileage are prob main dealers that do the 'Minimum £500 or £1000 for your part ex!!'

I got £500 for some old Sierra i traded in when Anna bought her Zetec-S from Fords in Welling.

Bung the cav on Ebay.

I did it with one of my old 205 GTIs, the beauty of Ebay being the opportunity to describe at length the vehicle and all the faults.

I was totally honest about my car, listing every fault (the engine and running gear was mint, but the body was shot), put it on with no reserve etc, and ended up getting £150 more than I paid for it.

I may try that but don't wanna til I get my new one. I'm just scared that if I don't put a reserve then I may only get 50p for it
