FAO Everyone.. what do you know about oils?
Some questions about OIL
1) Do you know enough about it?
2) Do you want to know more?
3)Would a forum dedicated to the discusion of oils and oil technology with dedicated Oil experts be a welcome addition??
4) Would a source of cheaper oil be welcome? (daft question)
I wouldnt normally consider any more forums aswe have too many now IMO but given oil is the lifeblood of your engine and you all spend a HELL OF A LOT of money on it, maybe its a worthwhile idea...
Il leave it to you lot to answer that one.... i NEED your input please

id like to know more about them but a few of the posts ive read by the oil man has went right over my head who would you trust, someone who has worked with oils everyday and has no doubt loads of experience of different oils and what they can and cant do etc.or listen to the guy who builds engines everyday and advises you what to do.probably just coz arguments id think.i was advised by the person who built my engine to use casrol rs,yet reading on here seems that may be bad for the engine
i suppose it could only educate folk more and im sure there would be many intresting threads to read

yup very good idea, im always wondering which oil is the best, once you pick a grade theres all sorts to choose from, brand...synthetic...mineral...cheapy
also if people could say what oil they use and may have found any issues with
a little list of what oils for what engines as a rule of thumb would stop the constant what oil for what engine posts

education and the ability to make infomed decisions are always welcome IMO.
Some people will take the time to read, some won't, some will claim they don't understand a word of it, and some will argue til they are blue in the face - but having the information is always better than not, offering the opportunity to learn for those that want to..
So from me - YES!
unfortunately there will never be a single simple answer to "which is best", but the opportunity to make an informed decision (or even 'guess' ) is better than blindly taking what your mate says in the pub as gospel.

RichardPON,
I don't think it requires a whole forum at all!
Why not a link in FAQ or something similar?

Also.. a FAQ wont give you any discounts, nor will it deal with new technologies as and when they occur..

However, please neglect from calling it, "Passion Oil", as that is reserved for a different forum I use, and would rather not discuss it

My only fear is that it depends on the "expert" you use, as it seems very difficult to get a fully objective opinion from anyone, as they will have their own views on what is best etc, which may conflict with another "expert", so will leave you with two different views from two different people on the same product, meaning people are none the wiser .
Perhaps you should get the technical bods from each oil company to give a statement as to why their brand of oil is best for our applications and post each one up under the brand name so peeps can choose which one they want to use from the person with the best "arguement" .

Passion Ford raffle comes to mind.....not enuff support for it...as you can see by how many replies so far....Just put a post about oil in the technical forum...if people are really bothered they can ask questions in that thread.
BUT as Mike says it needs more than one oil specialist....as say this Oilman is getting a good deal on say Castrol RS that month...he gonna say thats the dogs ..IMO you need someone who DONT sell oil but is an expert!!!!!
MY OPINION Stu so please dont take ANY offence.

Just a quick point reading this.
I do not work for an oil manufacturer, I am a seller of 5 different brands.
I can only point out the facts and it's up to you which brand/grade you choose.
If you were to be offered 10w-40 by Castrol, Silkolene, Fuchs, Mobil or Total which one would you choose and why?
Personally, based on technical data, I would choose the one with the best spec (highest viscosity index) as it's a better oil.
It may be surprising to learn the the one with the highest VI index is Fuchs! Who are they I hear you cry? Well they're only the largest independent oil blender in the world with sales of 1,000,000,000 euros per annum and factory fill positions with VAG, Mercedes, Ford, BMW etc. They are also the parent company of Silkolene here in the UK. (they also make top synthetic oils)
You learn something every day and that's where we can help.
Cheers

Castrol RS 10w-60 (Hydrocracked/Modified Mineral Oil)
Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w-50 (PAO poly alpha olefin)
Silkolene PRO R 15w-50 (Ester/PAO)
In order of quality:
1)Silkolene
2)Mobil
3)Castrol
I think I've posted this before but you need to understand the importance of esters and why an ester/pao blend is the best.
Esters
All jet engines are lubricated with synthetic esters, and have been for 50 years, but these expensive fluids only started to appear in petrol engine oils about 20 years ago. Thanks to their aviation origins, the types suitable for lubricants work well from –50 degC to 200 degC, and they have a useful extra trick.
Due to their structure, ester molecules are “polar”; they stick to metal surfaces using electrostatic forces. This means that a protective layer is there at all times, even during that crucial start-up period. This helps to protect cams, gears, piston rings and valve train components, where lubrication is “boundary” rather than “hydrodynamic”, i.e. a very thin non-pressure fed film has to hold the surface apart. Even crank bearings benefit at starts, stops or when extreme shock loads upset the “hydrodynamic” film.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Simon
