Default Potential gearbox problem, help anyone!

Any ideas on front end noise..

I bought a mk6 escort a couple of weeks ago, and at the time had a slight whuring noise coming from the front end. It sounded like a wheel bearing. And a mechanic friend diagnosed it as such too.

Subsiquently the noise has got louder and more prominant. And I have also noticed that it dissapears when the clutch is dipped which makes me think that it is drivetrain related Either driveshaft or Pinnion side of the gearbox.

The noise is speed related not gear dependant.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this??

I realise that noises are difficult to diagnose on the net lol.

Thanks in advance

Mark

if it stops when you dip the clutch its most likely the release bearing mate

so may as well do the clutch at the same time lol

Cheers dan I thought the release bearings were noisy when, clutch not engaged and stationary?

Your drifting skills improved any more?

Any one know somewhere cheap for a clutch and release bearing?

if i was to guess id say not clutch bearing, but box.

when i had a noise when depressing the clutch, it turned out to be bearing.

when i had a 'whurring' noise that went when the clutch was not pressed, it turned out to be mainshaft bearing in the box (clutch was new from the bearing racket anyway).

may be wrong though

Don't think its main shaft as its speed dependant not gear. Thinking it's pinnion/crownwheel or drive shafts.

I'd like it to be the release bearing lol

if it whines when driving but not when clutch is pressed, im sure its the box. hope, for your sake, its the relese bearing, though without taking the box off and changing the clutch it will be hard to tell.

when i had a whirring (with clutch not pressed) and a high pitched squeal(with clutch pressed), i changed the clutch and bearing, and the squeal stopped, but whirring remained.

when i changed the box for a recon one a month later, the whirring stopped.

hope that helps
