Default 1600 zetec rally engine

have a 1600 zetec black top that i am wanting to fit to my rally car. I am looking for 150-170 BHP. Is this achieveable? Would cams, carbs and an ignition only management system get me there? I would like to fit bike carbs as this is the cheaper option. Is there any draw back with this or are 45's the better way to go

1600 is the WORST zetec for any form of power. Get rid of it and pick up a 1.8 or 2.0 for £50, do the carbs etc and you'll be looking at that power if done right

If you want to stay in 1600, you need to pick up a 1600 Zetec-SE from a focus/fiesta/puma.

Much more tunable.

why roll your eyes? Its a well known fact that the 1600's were the most restrictive of all the zetecs? Im just saying why push one engine further to its limits and maybe even struggle to get what you want out of it when you can pay £50 for a 1.8/2.0 and know your not gonna have any problems?
Its called advice and an opinion. Pretty sure im allowed to give both on here

How can it be an opinion, if you state it's fact?

Westfield use the Zetec-SE in their latest kit cars, it can't be that shit.. can it ?

I didnt say it was shit full stop! There good for what they were built for. Its a bit different in a car that weighs nothing, you could put a 1.3 in a westfield and it would feel better than in an escort

My opinion was to go for the 1.8/2.0, its fact that the 1600 was the most restrictive

OK.

But if he used a Zetec-SE, a manifold, lairy cams, big end bolts and a remap will see 150bhp

Erm,, probably looking at around £1500 if you fit it yourself?

And yeah, should be reliable enough.

Yeah, bloody great limiter is still standard at the moment, will be shifted to 7600 in a few weeks, but it pulls like a train!

getting back on topic.

i remember seeing a 1.6 focus in a mag that hit 165 bhp on PE rollers and that just had twin throttle boddies and maybe/probably a zorst of some kind too.

it was prob in performance ford or summit. cars off here though i think!

come to think of it, might have been in the PF mag.

Dan is on about the zetec-se as found in fiesta/focus all alloy twin cam, mega tuneable, with correct manifolding, cams and a remap will make a reliable 150. With new rods, pistons, management and all the above and TB's will make 200 bhp nearly. Without touching the head!

You are on about the 1600 zetec-e which IS shit
