Default Laying a patio......

Suppose this is directed at Lee Reynolds mostly, but I'm about to start prepping a section of my parents' garden this weekend to lay a patio.

I think I've got a fair idea of the basics, but are there any trade secrets that might be helpful?

Have plenty of hardcore from previous broken up brickwork that I've kept. Presume a layer of sharp sand on top, compacted with a vibrating plate?

It's not carrying any serious weight, so obviously there's no need for serious support......

Any special tips?

aye you got the general idea pon. Dig out about 8 inch below the finished height of ya patio. Check the ground then and if its fairly solid and ya happy with it then fill ya hole with hardcore and compact it. Do it in layers if you can. Then i solid bed my slabs on mortar. I never lay slabs on sharp sand alone its shit imo...ive never come accross slabbing that stays good when layed like that

You say NOT to lay it on sharp sand on its own?

Layer of mortar instead of just spotting each slab?

When i did mine in our old house it was compacted hardcore, then sharp sand and a large blob of mortar in each corner of the slab - it worked a treat.

yeah pon solid mortar no gaps. Gaps allow for ants as said etc. Use your old bricks as a base hardcore then top it off with small stuff like 20mm to dust limestone. Compact it and levl it off so that it makes it easier to gauge the amount of mortar required under each slab
