laptop virus help please....
right, got a laptop from my mate, with the brief to fix it
He's been surfing 'adult entertainment' websites with no virus protection, so as you can imagine, there are viruses littered all over it.
I've put some virus software on it (zone alarm, avast and ad-aware), installed windows SP2 and all the updates, which seems to have got rid of all the viruses, but it now has another problem. When it is on, even if it is just sitting idle, the hard drive is constantly churning away, with the green light constantly flickering. It is not doing any virus scans, as I have switched all these off. So the computer now runs at a snails pace constantly!
Anyone got any ideas as to what the problem could be?
thanks in advance

Couple of things as a test.
Stop the Automatic Updates service - Some windows patch has fooked this service and it becomes a resource hog
Kill the AshServ32 process. The server component of avast, not really needed.
It'll run fine.

ok cheers for that. it all seems to be running ok now, but there are still a few infected files in the windows folder, which i am unsure weather to delete or not. they won't repair. and when surfing the net, it is being attacked by pop ups, even tho the pop up blocker is set to block all pop ups!!
any ideas??

go on to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and do a free virus scan, it picks up virus, trojans, spyware etc, and it does work because ive used it myself
Note that you will need to download a small file probably before it will scan and it will take at least 10mins or more to complete
