Default How do people 'raise' their cars to work underneath safely?

Now as Tony C will vouch, I hate getting under a car, whether its jacked up, has those metal floor ramps, axle stands, or even proper car ramps PMSL

I have a bit of work to do under the car, IE waxoiling it, adjusting exhaust.. Tony C's brother has offered to lend me his proper car ramps for a few hours, but I want to get out this phobia of getting under cars... LOL

Whats best to get the car off the floor a reasonable height? Thought about jacking car up enough to get a steelie under each wheels? Or shall I use metal ramps..

How do u guys do it, and no I dont wanna see that pic of the car held up by a jack and about 15 housebricks ON the jack

and have a fucking large bill and a car that may not have the problem fixed first time based on the techs not really paying attention to the car or there being a intermitant fault they cant find when its there

not to mention being up to your arse in debt and get paied to pay bills and not have much money left to enjoy life cause you spend 300 quid a month on basic work that quickfit could undertake for a fraction of the cost

working on your car as a car enthusiast is the BEST way imo

ive got access to 15 seperate ford technicians who do everything when it comes to working on cars INCLUDING engine rebuilds and gearbox rebuilds

i still so as much work as i can EVEN THOUGH I CAN GET WORK DONE FOR A DRINK

its part of "being into cars" i find

also find my car dont have to stay off the road till i get paied if i try this way of working

i bought these to use, theyre on my spares/reference car at the moment so i can strip all the suspension parts off, and get all the fuel and brake pipes to, and still be able to wheel this or my project car into the garage,

trolley jack, axel stands, leave in gear and chock the wheels.

my mum always hates me going under the car, even just for an oil change but she has good reason for it. her dad died when she was about 25, he had his big bus of a car up on ramps, handbrake failed and it rolled down and crushed his head.

shame cos i never met him

not to put you guys off any more than you already are

I allways use a decent trolley jack and axle stands..

Only time I used a scissor jack... changing a wheel on my M3, car rolled backwards off the jack (without the wheel on) and came to rest on my mrs car. Jack was buckled up and just holding on mrs cars bumper Made the decision then to tip toe into my garage and get the trolley jack out.

sorry but i just have to have a rant.

arent ford jacks for the focus utter shite??!!!!

got to collage one day and the brakes were awfull, skweeling like it had a stone in it so tried jackin up an it didnt fit properly an as the big flat bit was at an angle it just sank into the tarmac an car didnt raise up!!!

then one night after pub, got to the car an had a flat so had to change it usin the ford shity half scisor type jack and it barely lifted the car enough to get the wheel off and itwas wobblin about loads! was shittin myself!!

rant over

Thanks for the replies, not just me then!

EFISte2, that cool mate

might get loads of slab type things, jack it up one at a time till its 3 high on each wheel, then trolley jack it and axle stand it

Overkill? Probably, but at least i can get under knowing I'll be safe

I hated getting under cars at the best of times as my imagination always sees the worst Then my brother as a joke said "Im gonna drop the car on you" and he pretended to turn the jack handle! Problem was he actually did turn the handle and the front bumper lant on my shoulder... Now I hate being under cars, so Ive turned to powder coating

Gotta pull gearbox off me Esc Cos this week tho, so 2 axle stands and 2 3 tonne trolley jacks will be supporting the car
