Default Am I Liable?

OK so I just sold my old car.
My insurance had already switched over to my new car, so no ins on old car.
also the tax and mot had expired (it was being stored on private property).

The buyer came to collect it, signed all the paperwork, etc. then bump started it and drove it away.

I'd made sure the buyer was aware it had no tax and mot before they came to buy.

I'm not liable for that car being on the road today am I? not since the paperwork is all signed over etc.
or am I at fault for not preventing the new owner from driving it away?

not a receipt as such...
I've got a copy of the log book bit signed and dated - the original is in the post to the dvla.

I had a problem a couple of months ago, i didn't send the log book away to the dvla when i sold a car, (the new owner was going to do it), anyway the guy got done for having no tax, the fine came to me through the post as I was still the owner according to the computer. all i did was send a letter to the dvla explaining what had happened and that sorted everything out.

best bet would be to get him to sign a dated/timed receipt, but as you have his signature in the logbook bit, you should be ok.

Have you got any of his other details, in case you do get a letter through the post?

There is an offence of permitting no insurance but once you have sold it to him then you have no responsibility at all. If he drives with no insurance / mot / tax then its entirely his fault.

I would always get a signed dated and timed receipt in case he goes through a gatso and then says he picked it up after this occurred.

when you buy or sell a car, always write out a receipt

that being said, you're fine. it's his responsibility, not yours

Sold a car to a mate a while back, anyway police came round after seeing it smoking and making loads of noise (chatter)

Said who's car, I said his, he said mine twat. I said its his, i've just sold it. he was insured etc. etc. and was all fine, BUT it all fell on him, nothing to do with me.
